Latvijas Pasts Releases Stamp Block Honouring a Speed Skating Legend

The first day cancellation for the philatelic items "Latvian Sports Legends — Speed Skater Alberts Rumba" will take place on August 15, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at the Latvian Sports Museum. The stamp block has a nominal value of 4.45 euros and will be available in a limited edition of 5,000 copies. Its design, including the stamp layout, was created by Ģirts Grīva.
Alberts Rumba (1892–1962) is regarded as one of the most prominent Latvian speed skaters and a distinguished sports figure of the 1920s–1940s. His first major achievement was securing 7th place in allround speed skating at the inaugural Olympic Winter Games in 1924 (Chamonix, France). He was also the only Latvian to compete in the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
A. Rumba was an eight-time Latvian champion in allround speed skating (1924, 1926–1932) and also held several Latvian records in various distances: 500, 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 metres.
In both 1928 and 1931, A. Rumba won the champion’s title at the Latvian National Sports Festival and became the first recipient of the State President Gustavs Zemgals’ travelling trophy in 1928.
Throughout his 69-year lifetime, A. Rumba not only established a brilliant sports career but also played an active role in various sports organisations, particularly in the Latvian Winter Sports Union.
The “Latvian Sports Legends” series aims to immortalize sports history and document the achievements of Latvian athletes in a unique way, promoting the country’s image, fostering patriotism and sparking wider interest in Latvia’s sporting legacy.
