Mail for official correspondence only

13 th century.

in the 13 th century Riga is part of the postal area of the Livonian order and the Union of Hanseatic cities. These organizations use mail only for their own purposes. in  

, in 1580, the Hanseatic Urban Union publishes the first known rules on messenger work and salaries – Botenordnung. in  

, in the 16 th century, various postal organizations are already operating – in the courts of rulers, monasteries, universities, cities and wholesalers' associations.  

Establishment of public Mail in Riga

17 th century.

1632 shall be considered as the year of establishment of the postal service in the territory of the present Latvia. The King of Sweden appointed Vidzeme and Prussia postmaster Jekabi Becker (Jacob Becker) organizes regular public mail in Riga, which is used by traders and the rest of the population. in  

, in 1685, the Duke of Kurzeme, Fridrich Kazimiri, establishes his own post office and demands the abolition of the postal activity of the Swedish authorities, but King Charles XI of Sweden does not pay attention to this claim while enjoying his rights in Kurzeme.  

Development of First postage stamps and Post in Russian Empire

18 th century.

on July 5, 1710, Russian troops, led by Peteri I, occupy Riga and become part of the Russian Empire. in  

, in 1857, the first postage stamps are printed in Russia, which also become the first postage stamps in the territory of the present Latvia. in  

, in 1881, Bella society begins installing the first telephone lines in Riga.  

Establishment of the Post of the Republic of Latvia

20 th century.

in 1905, the building of the Riga Post Office, designed by Mr Novikov, was

opened in the corner of the present Aspazija Boulevard and Krisjana Baron Street. in  , on May 7, 1927, the first philatelist organization was founded in Latvia. in  

, in 1936, Latvia participated for the first time in an international philatelic exhibition in Königsberg, Germany (now Kaliningrad in Russia).  

 

Mail during Soviet and Nazi occupation

1954

in 1954, Riga Post offices are renamed the Riga Post Office and 39 communications offices are under its authority. in

1955, the   establishes the Latvian Ministry of Soviet communications, which also oversees the operation of the postal sector. the  

opens the new Riga main Post Building in Stacijas Square on October 1, 1965.  

 

Renewal of independent public postal services

1991

on January 2, 1992,

the state company Latvijas Pasts is founded. in 1992, the   Latvijas Pasts enters into the first international money remittance agreement with the United States.

in May 1992, the   Latvijas Pasta participates for the first time in an international philatelia exhibition in Essen, Germany. in  

1994, the 21 st Congress of the Universal Postal Union is

held

in Seoul, South Korea, in which Latvia participates for the first time. the   announces amendments to the Postal Law on March 11, 1997, and Latvijas Pasts becomes a public limited company of non-profit organizations.  

Liberalisation of the postal market and accession to the euro area

2004

on November 1, 2004, Latvijas Pasts   becomes a public limited liability company. in

October 2006, a mail sorting centre is opened in the territory of Riga International Airport in  .

2025

in 2025, Latvijas Pasts starts the creation of customer centres by introducing a new concept of customer service.
