Philately

Philately is the collecting of postal payment marks — stamps — and other stamp-related issues, an activity carried out by collectors known as philatelists.

Stamps are postal payment marks used to pay for the delivery of letter correspondence. At the same time, they play an important role in depicting national events, cultural and natural treasures, and achievements. Often, they are miniature works of art that reveal the unique story of a country to the whole world.

Philatelia

Stamp Collections – Diverse

Philatelists create stamp collections based on various principles. Collections can include the stamps of a particular country in chronological order or be dedicated to a special theme, such as flora, fauna, sports, the Olympic Games, space, or others.

Collectors choose both cancelled (postmarked) and uncancelled stamps. Philatelists also favor stamp blocks, sheets, miniature sheets, first day covers, special cancellation envelopes, stamp exhibition booklets, and other postal issues.

The paper used for printing, watermarks, color variations, perforation, and other elements also play an important role in making collections uniquely special.

In Latvia, the philatelists’ community life is organized by the Latvian Philatelic Society.

Stamp Issuance – Strictly Regulated

The procedure for issuing stamps is regulated by Cabinet of Ministers regulations on the production and circulation of stamps and other payment marks of the Republic of Latvia, and the handling of items bearing invalid or counterfeit postal payment marks.

Each year, the Stamp Issue Commission develops the thematic plan for stamp issuance for the coming year, taking into account submissions received from residents or organizations submitted no later than six months before the new calendar year. The range of stamp themes is diverse and can be supplemented with events important to the country.

Various artists design the stamps, maintaining their artistic diversity and high quality.

A Personalized Stamp for Everyone!

The Post also offers the issuance of individually designed stamps. This means that anyone can order a stamp with their desired design — for example, choosing an important photograph, which after printing can be used as a postal payment mark.

It is an opportunity to commemorate an important event in a unique way, for both private individuals and legal entities.
