Restrictions and prohibitions on the export of works of art

It is not permitted to export objects with significant cultural, historical or artistic value from the Republic of Latvia without the permission of the State inspection for Heritage Protection.

Cultural objects the export of which requires authorisation irrespective of their place of origin:

  • Archaeological antiquities dating back to the 17 th century (inclusive) obtained by:
    • excavations or found in land, land or water at sites of
    • archaeological finds
    • from archaeological excavations
  • more than 100 years old fragments separated from the cultural object that are an integral part of an art, history or religious monument.
  • Inkunabulas and more than 100-year-old handwriting, including maps of geography and musical scores (either individually or in a collection).
  • Archives of various types containing copies over 100 years old (irrespective of material).
  • Books over 100 years old (either individually or in a collection).
  • Collections of historical, paleontological, ethnographic or numismatic value.
  • More than 100-year-old art and antiques.
