Latvijas Pasts offers original postcards and special stamps at Museum of Medicine within this year’s Night of Museums

16.05.2014

Latvijas Pasts has released original postcards dedicated to the postal theme. Anyone attending the Night of Museums will have the chance to buy the cards and send them right away to his or her family and friends only from the special postal stand at Pauls Stradins Museum for History of Medicine on Saturday, May 17, 2014. There will be several different types of Latvijas Pasts stamps featuring the Museum of Medicine available for purchase at the postal stand too. Visitors who will purchase all postcards in the new series will be able to get a free postcard with an illustration from the 1555 edition of the world-famous book De humani corporis fabrica, which is held in the Museum's collections.

Three of the four original Latvijas Pasts postcards interweave the past and the present in an intricate way, thus emphasizing the role of the museum as a keeper of historical and present-day testimonies. The postcards use the urban atmosphere of the modern Riga and Rundāle Palace as a background against which daily scenes from the early days of the post are depicted. In turn, the fourth postcard will bring special joy to the youngest visitors of the Night of Museums and creative individuals: anyone will have the opportunity to paint this card according to their own sense of color.

To mark the fifth anniversary of Latvijas Pasts participation in the activities within the Night of Museums, the company has prepared a surprise postal stand for the visitors. Anyone who will purchase all four postcards in the series will be able to get a free card from Latvijas Pasts depicting the stamp released by Latvijas Pasts back in 2007 and dedicated to the centenary of the Museum for History of Medicine. The stamp features the illustration of the human skeleton from the 1555 edition of Andreas Vesalius' world- famous book De humani corporis fabrica, which is held in the Museum's collections.

Those who will visit the postal stand from 6 PM to 11 PM will have the chance not only to buy the postcards, but also cancel them with the special Night of Museums cancellation and mail them to recipients both in Latvia and abroad. When sending the postcards, Latvijas Pasts will offer to purchase three kinds of stamps released earlier this year and dedicated to the museums of medicine situated in Riga, the European Capital of Culture 2014: this is not only Pauls Stradins Museum for History of Medicine, which is one of the three largest museums of this field in the world, but also the branches of the said museum - the Museum of Pharmacy and Jēkabs Prīmanis Museum of Anatomy

Participation of Latvijas Pasts in the Night of Museums has now become a tradition. This is the fifth time that the company is taking part in this cultural event by issuing special postcards and creating a special Night of Museums cancellation.
