Latvijas Pasts drivers testing capabilities of environmentally friendly electric minivan for short-distance mail deliveries

To analyze the options for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from Latvijas Pasts as a company with a resource-intensive car fleet, the company has attracted co-financing from the Climate Change Financial Instrument within an open tender and started testing a Nissan e-NV200 electric minivan to evaluate the efficiency of short-distance mail deliveries and cost effectiveness.

Every working day, Latvijas Pasts ensures deliveries among and between 621 post offices and 230 delivery points throughout Latvia. The company’s fleet currently consists of almost 300 cars with internal combustion engine, burning fossil fuels. This means that substantial financial resources are used for both fleet maintenance and fuel purchase, thus creating an impact on the environment.

Participation in the open tender on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Transport Sector – Support for the Use of Electric Vehicles and Development of Charging Infrastructure for the projects financed from the Climate Change Financial Instrument is the first step of Latvijas Pasts towards the practical assessment of future prospects for the exchange of postal correspondence and mail deliveries in the most eco-friendly way. At the moment, given the technical capabilities of the particular electric minivan, testing takes place in regard to mail deliveries at relatively short distances. It is clear, however, that due to the development of the electric vehicle technology and charging infrastructure in the future, the use of environmentally friendly electric vehicles will become increasingly prevalent.

The Climate Change Financial Instrument is the state budget program of the Republic of Latvia, which aims to contribute to averting global climate change and adapting to the consequences of climate change, as well as to promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
