Latvijas Pasts improves environment accessibility in post offices

SJSC Latvijas Pasts, the largest provider of postal services in Latvia, in collaboration with the non-governmental organization Apeirons, is taking active steps to address the issues of environment accessibility for people with disabilities. Work to ensure accessibility for the disabled is currently underway in 249 Latvijas Pasts post offices.

The needs of people with disabilities were taken into consideration when refurbishing Riga post office No. 50 of Latvijas Pasts at 2 Stacijas Laukums, Riga (located in shopping mall Origo), resulting in a construction of two cash desks with a low level section, thus providing easier accessibility for people in wheelchairs and ensuring better quality postal services. The post office in Origo has also been equipped with the waiting line management system Qminder as an additional service for customer convenience. The system regulates the customer flow and allows those visiting the post office to take their ticket remotely by using a mobile application on their smartphone or tablet and get notified about the approximate waiting time, the queue progress and their turn when there are two people before them in the queue.

Latvijas Pasts has been focusing on targeted improvements to the quality of postal services and the range of the available services, including improved access to post offices for the customers. In cities with several post offices, where possible, informative notifications are being put up in post offices in places accessible for people with disabilities, showing the contact details of the nearest post office with easy access for people with special needs. Latvijas Pasts, in collaboration with the non-governmental organization Apeirons, will continue making the improvements in other post offices.

Ivars Balodis, Chairman of the Board at Apeirons points out: “The accessible environment is not an exclusive advantage aimed at one particular social group – it is a real-life necessity for the largest section of society. Therefore, we highly appreciate the priority set by SJSC Latvijas Pasts to ensure the accessibility in all post offices throughout Latvia. It is equally important for people with different disabilities as well as for the elderly and families with young children”.
