Young people used opportunity to gain first work experience at Latvijas Pasts

During the summer, SJSC Latvijas Pasts provided 20 students with the opportunity to work and acquire their first job skills. The young people were working in the Letter Sorting Department of the Mail Processing Service of the Riga Sorting Centre under the Mail Processing and Delivery Department of Latvijas Pasts.

20 young people had a chance to try their hand as mail sorters, mainly doing jobs such as letter-sorting and processing as well as sorting the local regular and registered mail and transferring it for further processing. In addition, the students could get some insight into the process of sorting mail by addresses for forwarding it to Riga City and Riga Region post offices of Latvijas Pasts. Before the young people set to work, they were given a thorough briefing on occupational safety issues.

Helma Purvinska, HR Director at Latvijas Pasts, mentions breaking stereotypes and raising awareness of the postal operations as the main objectives for employing the students. “Our goal is to show the young people that we are a modern company, where it is possible to build a career. The postal industry is diverse enough for everyone to choose a job according to their skills and preferences.” H. Purvinska claims that a summer job is a challenge not only for young people but also employers. “During these couple of months or weeks, we try to get to know the young person and his or her motivation to work and plans for the future to be able to better understand and predict what the future employee will be.”

For several years in a row, Latvijas Pasts has provided students with the opportunity to get acquainted with the postal operations and earn their first salary during the summer period. The young people who have jumped at the chance to work in the Mail Processing Service of the Riga Sorting Centre of Latvijas Pasts have admitted that the job has taught them to be patient, careful and responsible as well as get a better understanding of the importance of teamwork.
