To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Latvian riflemen battalions, Latvijas Pasts releases the new stamp Latvian Riflemen – 100. The denomination of the stamp Latvian Riflemen – 100 is €1.71 and its print run is 200,000 copies. The new stamp and the cover have been designed by Lilija Dinere. The print run of the special cover is 1,500 copies. The stamps have been printed at Baltic Banknote printing house in Latvia.
August of 1915 marked one year since the developments of World War I had taken over the whole of Europe. The situation was particularly severe in Latvia: the German army had already occupied Kurzeme and Zemgale and was advancing into Riga. State Duma deputies J. Goldmanis and J. Zālītis sought permission to establish special Latvian troops. In these circumstances, information on the permission for Latvians to form their own national military units sparked much public response. Thousands of Latvian men were willing to voluntarily face the enemy, shoulder to shoulder with their fellow countrymen. By the end of 1915, 8 riflemen battalions and 1 regiment of Kurzeme were formed. The first battles of the 1st Riflemen Battalion took place on October 25, 1915 near Mangaļi house in Tīreļpurvs.

The new stamp Latvian Riflemen – 100 can be viewed here.

The next new philatelic release is scheduled for November 13.
