Volume of international small packets handled by Latvijas Pasts up nearly 34% in 2015

The amount of incoming international small packets processed by Latvijas Pasts in 2015 has increased by almost 34%, or approximately 1 million units. In December, which is traditionally the busiest time of the year for postal operators throughout the world, Latvijas Pasts processed 25% more small packets than in the same period in 2014.

There continues to be a marked increase in the number of small packets received at Latvijas Pasts from online stores, particularly from various Asian countries, with China comprising the biggest share. The amount of international small packets handled by Latvijas Pasts in 2014 reached over 3.6 million units, or 34% more than in 2014. The trend of increasing deliveries from online stores is expected to continue also in 2016.

In December 2015, the busiest period for sending and receiving gifts, Latvijas Pasts handled nearly half a million of both incoming and outgoing mail items, which is by 25% more than in the same period in 2014. The amount of simple domestic and international letter correspondence in December remained unchanged compared to the same period in 2014 – the typical volume of such mail is slightly over 71 tons. Just like in previous years, the biggest amount of international mail in 2015 was sent to and received from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, and Russia.

One of the biggest mail carriers is the national airline airBaltic. In 2015, Latvijas Pasts delivered approximately 535 tons of mail to various countries around the world with the airline’s flights.
