Voting for design ideas shortlisted for stamp design competition held by Latvijas Pasts and Ērenpreiss starts in social networks

Today, June 9, 2016 marks the start of voting for the entries shortlisted for the stamp design competition dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Gustavs Ērenpreiss, the legendary bike creator. The voting is being held in the social networks. Until June 16, any social network user may log in on the website http://jaunapastmarka.lv/ with their Twitter, Facebook or Draugiem account and vote for any of the 30 stamp design ideas shortlisted for the finals by the jury. The name of the author whose stamp will have received the most votes will be revealed on June 17, and the winning stamp will be released with a print run of 500,000 copies in July.

A total of 210 stamp design ideas were submitted for the fifth Latvijas Pasts new stamp design competition, which is being held this year in collaboration with the today’s developers of Ērenpreiss brand. The professional jury composed of experts in graphic design, philately and marketing shortlisted 30 entries for the final vote. In assessing the entries, the jury looked at the relevance of the submitted design ideas to the theme of the competition as well as the artistic quality, esthetics and sustainability. The stamp design competition to mark the anniversary of G.Ērenpreiss is distinguished by the uniqueness of the entries submitted and the interesting vision.

Kaspars Zariņš, Professor at the Art Academy of Latvia and member of the jury, points out that two-thirds of the entries submitted for the competition were “noteworthy”. In turn, Viesturs Masteiko, Marketing Manager at Ērenpreiss Original admits: “We are honored that Latvijas Pasts has chosen this theme of the competition and it has aroused interest in Latvia’s people. We are pleasantly surprised by the quality, diversity and uniqueness of the entries submitted.”

One Twitter, Facebook or Draugiem account can be used to vote for different stamps on the website http://jaunapastmarka.lv/, but only one vote may be cast for a stamp from a particular account per day. The voting will continue until June 16 and the winner will be announced on June 17. The stamp which will have received the most votes will be released by Latvijas Pasts with a print run of half a million copies on July 23 this year. The denomination of the new stamp will be EUR 0.50, corresponding to the cost of mailing a regular letter within Latvia. In addition to the chance to see the stamp with his or her design travel to countries far and near, the winner of the competition will receive a special prize – a personalized Ērenpreiss bicycle.

The stamp design contest has become a tradition of Latvijas Pasts that gives the general public an opportunity to get involved in the stamp design process. Otherwise, the stamp creation plan is managed by the special Stamp Issue Committee.

A total of 234 stamp design ideas were submitted for the previous contest held by Latvijas Pasts in collaboration with TV3 on the topic of Latvia’s Pride in 2014 and almost 6,385 votes were cast for the shortlisted entries by the users of the social networks Twitter, Facebook and Draugiem. The winner was the stamp Singing Trees by Solvita Kukle.

The winning stamp of 2013 was Imants Ziedonis Will Bloom Eternally created by Anda Pētersone, while the winning stamp of 2012 was designed by Jānis Uzraugs and depicted a BMX racer. The winner of the 2011 contest was Evita Eidinta with the stamp The Place Where Stories Are Born.
