To mark the World Post Day, Latvijas Pasts holds the tenth meeting of Latvian participants of the postcard sending project Postcrossing

To celebrate the World Post Day, Latvijas Pasts is holding the tenth meeting of Latvian participants of the international postcard sending project Postcrossing. The event will allow the postcrossers to share their experiences about the sending of postcards, to send new postcards and to get insight into the nuances of stamp making and the specifics of the philately sector. The meeting is scheduled to take place in the house of books and cultural goods NicePlace Mansards at 21a K.Barona Street (courtyard), Riga at 4 PM on the 7th of October 2016.

The World Post Day is celebrated in all the 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union on the 9th of October. Traditionally, during this period Latvijas Pasts gathers together the participants of the Postcrossing movement in honour of the World Post Day to promote the practice of sending postcards and provide greater insight into the activities of Latvijas Pasts.

Sending of postcards via the website www.postcrossing.com is gaining greater recognition across the world and also in Latvia. To promote postal services, Latvijas Pasts encourages everyone to participate in the international postcard sending project Postcrossing, which is open to any interested person who wishes to find previously unknown pen pals. Latvijas Pasts has received more than 530 unique postcards during the five years of participation in this project.

The tenth meeting of Latvian postcrossers will be held in an informal setting and will focus on sharing the experiences about the sending of postcards by the participants of this movement. Latvijas Pasts will provide the attending participants with postcards and stamps so that everyone would be able to send their message to an unknown pen pal from another country. Those who attend the meeting will have the opportunity to get to know Latvijas Pasts Stamp and Philately Department Director Edmunds Bebrišs who is in charge of both the issue of new stamps and the maintenance of the existing collection of the stamps owned by Latvijas Pasts, and this meeting will offer a chance to have a closer look at these matters. The artist Lilija Dinere who has designed a number of Latvijas Pasts stamps will also share her experiences regarding the stamp creation.

The international Postcrossing movement involves over 600,000 people from more than 200 countries of the world, and its participants have exchanged more than 37 million postcards. Residents of Latvia are also actively engaged in this movement, and their number today is over 3,000 people. Latvian postcrossers have sent approximately 216,000 postcards. This means that Latvia is ranked 27th in the world in terms of the number of cards sent within the project.

A new participant can send his or her first postcard by getting registered on the website www.postcrossing.com and receiving a postal address. When sending the card, the sender can be sure that he or she will get at least one postcard in return from a postcrosser who, perhaps, lives halfway around the world. When the postcard has been received, it should be registered on www.postcrossing.com, and the search for the next pen pal can begin.
