The amount of inbound international small packets handled by Latvijas Pasts in 11 months already exceeds the total number registered in 2015 by nearly 2 millions

The amount of inbound international small packets handled by Latvijas Pasts in 11 months of 2016 increased by 64% or 2.1 million units compared to the same period in 2015 and already exceeds the total number of all international small packets received in 2015 by 1.8 million units. In turn, the number of small packets processed by Latvijas Pasts during the first two weeks of December was by 86,000 units more than in the same period in 2015. Taking into consideration the growth dynamics of the number of items, an automation project is going to be implemented in the sorting centre of Latvijas Pasts in 2017 in order to speed up the processing of items.

In recent years there has been a marked increase in the number of small packets that arrive at Latvijas Pasts from online stores, particularly from various Asian countries, with China comprising the biggest share. The amount of inbound international small packets handled by Latvijas Pasts from January to November 2016 reached 5.4 million units, which is by 2.1 million units more than in the first 11 months of 2015 and which exceeds the total amount of the entire 2015 when 3.6 million units were processed.

From the 1st to the 15th of December, which is the busiest period for sending and receiving gifts before the year-end holidays, Latvijas Pasts received nearly 296,000 small packets, but the overall amount of inbound and outbound items of all types processed during the mentioned two weeks was more than 1.2 million.

The amount of letters received and sent in 11 months of 2016 reached 18.2 million units, and this is by 0.5% more than in the corresponding period in 2015. In turn, the number of letters processed from the 1st to the 15th of December 2016 amounted to 1.1 million, which is by 20.5 thousand letters more than in the same period of time last year.

Christmas and New Year’s greetings mainly travel within Latvia. As far as cross-border mail is concerned, most letter-post items during the holiday period are sent to and received from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany and Russia.

Taking into account the growth dynamics of the number of international small packets and forecasting the trends in the amount of items in the longer term, the first phase of the automation project is going to be implemented in the sorting centre of Latvijas Pasts during the coming year, automating part of the item handling process and improving its efficiency.

We would like to remind you that the last day for delivery of postal items before Christmas is the 23rd of December and for delivery before New Year – the 30th of December.
