The amount of inbound international small packets handled by Latvijas Pasts grows by 2 million units in 2017; the company also starts deliveries of transit items

The amount of inbound international small packets handled by Latvijas Pasts in 2017 increased by two million units compared to 2016 and exceeded eight million units. The biggest share of these items was made up of small packets from various foreign online trading platforms, mainly e-commerce stores in Asian countries. Last year Latvijas Pasts also initiated involvement in a transit project: deliveries of e-commerce items from Asia to third countries, mostly delivering items from China’s trading platform Alibaba.

In 2016 six million inbound international small packets were processed at Latvijas Pasts, which means that the amount of these small packets in 2017 increased by 33.3%. In December last year, which is traditionally the busiest period for sending gifts, Latvijas Pasts handled 0.86 million inbound international small packets, and this figure exceeds the result of the same period last year by 261,000 units.

In 2017 Latvijas Pasts became involved in transit deliveries of e-commerce items from Asia to third countries, mainly delivering items from China’s trading platform Alibaba. “Solutions related to delivery of postal items are a service which is in demand worldwide, but in the case with Latvijas Pasts we have even initiated this demand by taking proactive steps on our part, seeing it as something that opens unprecedented promising opportunities for the business of our company,” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

In the second half of 2017 Latvijas Pasts serviced around 20 cargoes from aircraft carrying transit items as part of the project, of which the largest cargoes were carried by Boeing 747. A similar Alibaba Group cooperation partnership operates in other countries too, including the US and Hong Kong.

In 2017 Latvijas Pasts processed several million items of different types, such as small packets, parcels, letters, postcards, express mail items, items in wrapper, promotional materials and press obtained by subscription.
