Latvijas Pasts in 2018: modernisation of service and growth of e-commerce and transit cargoes

The major challenges of Latvijas Pasts in 2018 are associated with both the modernisation of the service, transferring the provision of a number of functions to the virtual environment, and the further growth of e-commerce items and transit cargoes, which demands more and more new solutions related to data interconnectivity, delivery, sorting and servicing. According to preliminary data the net turnover of Latvijas Pasts in 2017 grew by more than 20%, exceeding EUR 75.3 million.

Continuing the implementation of the Latvijas Pasts modernisation projects, which have been started in the past two years, the key measures that are aimed at improvement of the service in 2018 are related to the partial transfer of the functionality of several services to the digital environment.

“In 2018 we are actively continuing the already ongoing service improvement projects and introducing completely new solutions. Our major challenges relate to the transformation of the traditional provision of services that has been in place for decades, with the transfer of some of the functionality to the digital environment. Already now most postmen and couriers use mobile devices when delivering registered items to customers and receiving customers’ signatures in the e-environment, which allows for reflecting the status of the item online immediately. Absolutely all postmen will work in this way in the second quarter, and this fact provides us with wide opportunities for further diversification and improvement of services,” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

More than 70 couriers of Eksprespasts of Latvijas Pasts and about 1,300 postmen will start using mobile terminals and mobile smart devices in 2018.

In accordance with preliminary data the net turnover of Latvijas Pasts in 2017 grew by 20%, amounting to EUR 75.3 million. E-commerce services and the implementation of the transit project have a significant impact on the turnover growth. The amount of cross-border small packets from foreign online stores processed by Latvijas Pasts in 2017 increased by 2 million units or 33.3% in comparison to 2016, while the delivery of e-commerce items delivered by Eksprespasts of Latvijas Pasts at Circle-K fuel stations grew by 38,000 units or 78% compared to 2016.

In 2017 Latvijas Pasts became involved in transit deliveries of e-commerce items from Asia to third countries, mainly delivering items from China’s trading platform Alibaba. In 2018 the active implementation of the transit project continues, focusing both on new destinations of items and on offering new services to customers.

At the end of 2017 Latvijas Pasts started to inform customers about the receipt of ordinary cross-border small packets through mobile text messages and stopped using the invitations in the paper format in cases when customers, while shopping on international websites, have indicated their exact mobile phone number. Over the three months Latvijas Pasts has already sent about 700,000 text messages to its customers in this way, and their number continues to grow.

Along with changes in the regulatory framework, in 2018 Latvijas Pasts started the development of a mobile information mechanism also for receipt of registered items: since the delivery of registered items is regulated precisely in legislation, with specific requirements set for its provision in regard to delivering such items to the recipient by hand, the information solution will also be different and its development will be more complex.

In 2017 Latvijas Pasts implemented the introduction of the multifunctional In-Out customer flow control system in 67 post offices throughout the country, ensuring not only the more orderly provision of services on the spot in the post offices, but also the opportunity to apply for postal services remotely using the Latvijas Pasts mobile App. In 2018 the implementation of the system will be continued by involving 20 more post offices, thus bringing the total number of the post offices equipped with this system to 87.

In 2017 Latvijas Pasts also modernised the functionality of the Postal Settlement System, introducing a mobile text message service to record the balance on the customer accounts, as well as speeding up the payment processing time of the bills to one business day at the most in accordance with the modern settlement principles.

In turn, to promote the long-term competitiveness of Latvijas Pasts, the company has started the development of new service areas, implementing the necessary steps for acquiring and fully securing the status of the cargo agent and the customs broker.
