Latvijas Pasts arranges a meeting of postcard senders – a special postcard and postmark will be presented

Latvijas Pasts arranges a traditional meeting of postcard senders and participants of the international Postcrossing movement, during which it is planned to get insight into the collection of historical postcards from the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation and, as usual, share one’s postcard sending experience. At the meeting a postcard and a postmark created specifically for this event will be presented by Latvijas Pasts. The event is scheduled to take place in NicePlace Telpa at 21a K.Barona Street (courtyard), Riga at 4 PM on the 31st of May 2018.

To promote the sending of postcards and the modern trends in this activity, provide insight into the postcard sending history and present the latest developments in the operation of Latvijas Pasts, postcard sending enthusiasts and members of the global Postcrossing movement have been brought together several times a year since 2011. This meeting will be special with a custom-made postcard, which every participant of this meeting will be able to send to a pen pal in any country of the world free of charge. The postcards can be stamped with a postmark which has been specifically designed for this event. As usual, the meeting will take place in a creative atmosphere, inviting everyone who likes to send and receive postcards from around the world to join in.

The participants of the event will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the narration of Zita Pētersone, historian of the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, about the museum’s postcard collection, which was created in the 20th century and currently comprises more than 17,000 items. The collection includes postcards depicting Riga city views and events, greetings cards, postcards portraying cultural workers, etc. The Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation is the oldest in the Baltics, and it stores about 500,000 different items.

Since 2011 Latvijas Pasts has been bringing together people who take interest in the tradition of sending postcards, particularly attracting the attention of young people and collectors and promoting the practice of sending postcards, as well as providing greater insight into the activities of Latvijas Pasts.

Postcrossing is an interesting combination of modern and traditional features, because by means of the Internet any participant of the project can receive and send tangible postcards from and to different parts of the world, thus creating a unique collection of postcards. A new participant can send his or her first postcard by getting registered on the website www.postcrossing.com and receiving a postal address. When sending the card, the sender can be sure that he or she will get at least one postcard in return from a postcrosser who, perhaps, lives halfway around the world. When the postcard has been received, it should be registered on www.postcrossing.com, and the search for the next pen pal can begin.

Latvijas Pasts has also been a participant of the Postcrossing movement since 2010. The most interesting postcards received by Latvijas Pasts can be viewed here
