Latvijas Pasts has sent out 1.5 million mobile text messages over six months to inform customers about the receipt of unregistered postal items

During the six months since November 2017 Latvijas Pasts has delivered 1.5 million invitations to customers in the form of mobile text messages, informing them about the receipt of ordinary cross-border small packets in post offices. This service applies to unregistered postal items from online stores for which the sender has specified the exact mobile number of the addressee and which cannot be placed in the recipient’s letter-box due to their size. The amount of inbound international small packets handled by Latvijas Pasts in the first four months of 2018 has grown significantly – by 0.9 million units.

To speed up the delivery of ordinary cross-border small packets, in November 2017 Latvijas Pasts started to send out mobile text message invitations regarding the receipt of items in post offices to those customers whose items have the exact mobile number of the recipient indicated on them and which cannot be placed in the addressee’s letter-box due to their size. Previously addressees received invitations regarding such items in the paper format in their letter-boxes. Within six months since the introduction of this system, the number of text message invitations sent by Latvijas Pasts has reached 1.5 million.

Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out: “Mobile text message invitations to receive ordinary unregistered postal items are a service that has been eagerly awaited by our customers. For our part we have fulfilled our promise of introducing e-invitations, sending out already 1.5 million of such text messages. Now we are working on the next stage of efficiency and customer service improvement: mobile text messages for receiving registered items.”

Along with changes in the regulatory framework, in 2018 Latvijas Pasts started the development of a mobile information mechanism also for receipt of registered items: since the delivery of registered items is regulated precisely in legislation, with specific requirements set for its provision in regard to delivering such items to the recipient by hand, the information solution will also be different and its development will be more complex. However, in 2018, it is planned to introduce a mobile invitation system also for receiving registered items.

In order for the mobile invitation system for the receipt of unregistered international postal items to function efficiently, Latvijas Pasts urges all customers who place orders for their items in international online shopping systems to always provide the correct mobile phone number. The amount of such items continues to increase.

In the first four months of 2018 compared to the same period in 2017 the number of inbound international small packets handled by Latvijas Pasts has increased by 0.9 million units or 38%, amounting to more than 3.3 million units. The largest growth was observed in April this year, when the amount of inbound international small packets increased by 52% compared to April 2017.

In total the number of such small packets in 2017 exceeded eight million.
