By mid-December the number of inbound international small packets at Latvijas Pasts has grown by one million
The amount of inbound international small packets handled by Latvijas Pasts from January to mid-December 2018 has increased by one million units compared to the same period in 2017 and currently is 8.5 million units. The biggest share of these items is made up of small packets from various foreign online trading platforms, mainly e-commerce stores in Asian countries, and the number of these items grows every year. 
 
In 2017 a total of slightly more than eight million inbound international small packets were processed at Latvijas Pasts, while in 2018 this amount was substantially exceeded already by mid-December. During the two weeks of December, which is the busiest period for sending and receiving gifts, Latvijas Pasts has handled 500,000 million inbound international small packets, and the total number of all kind of inbound and sent items processed in this period is over 1.1 million units. 
 
Christmas and New Year greetings are mainly sent within Latvia, while in communication with foreign countries most letter-post items travel to and from the UK, Ireland, Germany and Russia.
 
During the busiest period of the year, additional employees work at both the Item Processing and Sorting Centre of Latvijas Pasts and in post offices. Besides, several dozens of post offices have extended opening hours on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of December, providing the delivery of the maximum possible number of items before Christmas.
