Latvijas Pasts receives nearly 80 damaged postal item bags from the Netherlands

Latvijas Pasts has received 80 damaged postal item bags delivered from the Netherlands by air. Several bags with the items received are soaked through, while others have even fallen apart, so it is impossible to identify the addressees for some of them. In accordance with the procedure laid down by international law, Latvijas Pasts has drawn up a relevant document which has been submitted to PostNL, the Dutch postal operator. The damaged items are being repackaged at Latvijas Pasts so that they can be delivered to identifiable addressees – each damaged item is specially marked with an indication of receipt in damaged condition and accompanied by an informative letter from Latvijas Pasts.

Each of the nearly 80 bags received by air contains several dozens of items – most of the items are soaked through, but some of them have been completely destroyed by moisture, making it impossible to determine the recipient to whom the item was addressed.

At the moment Latvijas Pasts employees are repackaging the damaged items in order to be able to ensure deliveries to those addressees who can be identified. Each such item is marked with an appropriate indication of receipt in wet/damaged condition and accompanied by an informative letter from Latvijas Pasts. In order to make a claim for a low-quality delivery of an item, the recipient must inform the sender of the item received in damaged condition, who in turn must contact the Dutch postal establishment accordingly. For its part, Latvijas Pasts has already notified the Dutch postal operator of the relevant items received in damaged condition.

Linda Ševele, Head of the Quality Management Department at Latvijas Pasts, explains: “The customers who have received damaged items have the right to reject them and make a claim to the sender. If the item is delivered by a courier of Eksprespasts of Latvijas Pasts, the rejection must be effected by drawing up a relevant report upon the receipt of the item, and if the item is received at the post office, the paperwork for rejection must be completed by making a relevant report on the spot at the post office.” Taking into account that some recipients of the items cannot be identified due to the damaged packaging, Latvijas Pasts asks the addressees to contact the sender if the item from the Netherlands has not been received within one month of the date of dispatch on 3 December.

In case of questions or uncertainties, customers are asked to contact the specialists of Latvijas Pasts customer centres: phone +371 67008001, +371 27008001; e-mail: info@pasts.lv.

It is not unusual for Latvijas Pasts to receive items from abroad in damaged condition, but traditionally it occurs in the autumn and spring seasons, and the receipt of such a large number of damaged items is rare
