Latvijas Pasts has sent more than 765,000 e-invitations for receipt of registered items; applying for them is also possible from a postman

Since July 2018, when Latvijas Pasts introduced the electronic invitation service in the form of mobile text messages to receive registered – signed for or insured items, more than 765,000 such notices have been sent and more than 155,000 customers have applied for this free service. Now it is also possible to apply for e-invitations instead of notices in paper format from a postman who has delivered a registered item to the place of residence or office and will record the wish of the customer in the mobile smart device. Both private persons and legal entities may apply for the receipt of e-invitations.

Ensuring modern information exchange opportunities, in July 2018 Latvijas Pasts started offering the electronic invitation service in the form of mobile text messages to receive registered – signed for or insured items, replacing delivery of invitations in paper format to customers’ letter-boxes. According to the regulatory framework in regard to e-invitations for receipt of registered items, the addressee must give his or her consent to electronic communications. So far, the number of e-invitations sent by Latvijas Pasts has reached more than 765,000 and more than 155,000 customers have applied for the service.

The majority of registered items are small packets, parcels and express mail items from online stores – when shopping in such stores, one of the fields of the order to be filled in traditionally is the mobile phone number, which the sender usually indicates on the item. Therefore, when shopping online, it is important to always specify one’s mobile phone number, because an e-invitation can only be received for those items which have arrived at the post office and have the correct mobile phone number of the addressee is indicated on them.

For the convenience of customers, Latvijas Pasts has expanded the options of applying for the service: both private persons and legal entities may apply for this service free of charge in one of the four ways which suits them best: by recording their consent for the receipt of electronic invitations in the postman’s mobile smart device when receiving a registered item at their place of residence; by marking their consent for receipt of e-invitations on the information notice when receiving an item at the post office; by signing the application for the receipt of electronic invitations at the post office; or by sending the application signed with the secure electronic signature (the sample application form is available on the website of Latvijas Pasts website) to the Latvijas Pasts Customer Service e-mail address info@pasts.lv.

Latvijas Pasts started developing mobile invitations for registered items immediately after the adoption of corresponding changes in the regulatory framework at the end of 2017, which previously required the mandatory delivery of paper invitations for receipt of registered items. Registered (signed for or insured) items differ from ordinary items in the way that they are delivered to the addressee against signature; these items are assigned a unique number in the global postal system, consisting of a 13-digit code with two letters at the beginning and at the end and digits in the middle, for example, AB123456789CD, and some of these items can be tracked in the countries that publish this code on relevant websites.

Latvijas Pasts has been sending text messages to inform recipients of ordinary or unregistered small packets from foreign online stores since November 2017– until now the company has sent nearly four million mobile text message invitations regarding ordinary items received at post offices.

The e-invitations sent by Latvijas Pasts to customers regarding the receipt of both registered and ordinary items are one of the projects implemented by the company for the transition to the provision of services in the digital environment, ensuring more accessible postal services and reducing resource consumption.
