Latvijas Pasts starts testing motor scooters for quick and flexible delivery of items

In June 2019 Latvijas Pasts starts testing motor scooters to find out whether this convenient and compact vehicle can speed up the delivery of postal items in certain areas and improve the convenience of postmen. Two scooters have been purchased for the initial tests, and they will be tested by postmen in different parts of Latvia until the end of August. The first tests have started in Piņķi and Ventspils. After assessing the test results, a decision will be made on whether and where scooters will be used for regular delivery of items.

Scooters are economical, environmentally friendly, safe, compact and comfortable means of transport that can faster cover the daily walking and cycling routes of postmen and manoeuvre in areas where this is not possible for a postman who uses a car for delivery. In addition, the introduction of fast and motorised vehicles for item delivery can ensure not only more efficient delivery of items, but also a significant reduction in the physical load of postmen.

In order to identify the potential advantages of the consistent use of scooters for regular delivery of items, Latvijas Pasts has purchased two scooters that are intended specifically for item delivery and equipped with large lockable boxes to carry items and a special frame to ensure the stability and safe movement of the scooter. At the moment scooters are being tested at Piņķi and Ventspils post offices, and after that tests will begin in Jelgava and Rēzekne. Until the end of August other post offices throughout Latvia will also receive the scooters for testing.

As a result of the tests, postmen who have used the scooters will have to provide their assessment of their quality, ease of use and conformity to the delivery conditions in the specific area. The results of the tests will be summarised in autumn when the decision is planned to be made on whether, to what extent and in which areas the scooters will be used consistently for the delivery of postal items in the future.

A wide range of vehicles are being tested and used for item delivery around the world that correspond to the geographical characteristics of the specific area, the amount of items, the habits of the population and the intensity of the traffic flow.

In recent years Latvijas Pasts has been actively implementing various projects to enhance the postal services and quality and improve the postal item delivery processes.
