Latvijas Pasts delivers more than 50% of invitations for receipt of items to customers electronically

In June 2019 the number of mobile text messages delivered to Latvijas Pasts customers, inviting them to receive registered items, exceeds 50% of the total number of invitations this month. During the year, Latvijas Pasts has sent over 1.2 million mobile invitations to customers in total, and more than 190,000 customers have applied for this service. Latvijas Pasts encourages the customers who have not yet signed up to receive mobile text messages for registered items to express their consent to this free service in one of the ways most convenient to them.

To speed up the item delivery process, in July 2018 Latvijas Pasts started offering the electronic invitation service in the form of mobile text messages to receive registered – signed for or insured items, replacing delivery of invitations in paper format to customers’ letter-boxes. The receipt of e-invitations can be applied for in two simple steps: the addressee must give his or her consent to electronic communications and the correct mobile phone number of the addressee must be indicated on the item.

In June 2019 the share of invitations delivered to Latvijas Pasts customers in the form of mobile text messages exceeded 50% for the first time, accounting for 100,000 out of a total of 187.7 thousand invitations sent to customers. This means that not only the majority of registered items are delivered to customers faster, while reducing the number of the operations performed by the postal employees, but also a significant amount of paper resources is saved at the company.

“The transition of the invitation service to the digital environment enables our customers to receive items faster and our employees to provide postal services quicker, avoiding unnecessary and redundant additional functions. This is a service that we have introduced together with our customers, having listened to their wishes, so it is gratifying that we are now able to deliver proportionally more e-invitations,” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

Receiving invitations for registered items is a free service that both private persons and legal entities may apply for free of charge in one of the four ways which suits them best: by marking their consent for receipt of e-invitations on the information notice when receiving an item at the post office; by signing the application for the receipt of electronic invitations at the post office; by sending the application signed with the secure electronic signature (the sample application form is available on the Latvijas Pasts website) to the Latvijas Pasts Customer Service’s e-mail address info@pasts.lv; or by recording their consent for the receipt of e-invitations in the postman’s mobile smart device when receiving a registered item at their place of residence.

As the majority of registered items are small packets, parcels and express mail items from online stores, it is important to remember to check out the purchased item correctly by specifying the exact addressee’s phone number, which can traditionally be entered in one of the fields of the order to be filled in. Only in this case the customer can be notified of the receipt of the item via a mobile text message.

Registered items differ from ordinary items in the way that they are delivered to the addressee against signature; these items are assigned a unique number in the global postal system, consisting of a 13-digit code with two letters at the beginning and at the end and digits in the middle, for example, AB123456789CD, and some of these items can be tracked in the countries that publish this code on relevant websites.

Since 2017 Latvijas Pasts has also been sending text messages to its customers in order to inform them of the receipt of ordinary or unregistered small packets. So far the company has sent more than five million such notifications.

The introduction of e-invitations for the receipt of registered and ordinary items is one of the projects implemented by Latvijas Pasts, improving the speed, accessibility and quality of postal services.
