Latvijas Pasts digitally registers five million customer signatures and saves a tonne of paper over the year
To improve the functionality of postal services, Latvijas Pasts has opted out of the use of paper documents in the process of delivering registered items, introducing electronic signatures at all post offices, as well as equipping postmen with mobile smart devices that digitally register the customer signature for the fact of receiving a postal item. As a result, Latvijas Pasts has already registered more than five million customer signatures in total, saving more than a tonne of paper.

In the spring of 2019, Latvijas Pasts completed the project for the introduction of electronic signature devices, installing them in nearly 400 post offices: since the launch of the project in November 2018 until the end of June 2019 more than 2.3 million customer signatures have been registered for receiving registered items.

In turn, from June 2018, when Latvijas Pasts postmen across Latvia started using mobile smart devices, registering customer signatures digitally in the process of receiving items, until the end of June 2019 approximately 2.8 million customer signatures were recorded. The mobile smart devices used by postmen also record the reason for delivery delays in situations where the recipient of a registered item is not present at the specified address. The information on the delivery of the item is recorded in a real-time mode in the single item registration system of Latvijas Pasts.

The introduction of the signature devices has speeded up the item delivery processes, as well as allowed for reducing paper consumption and saving natural resources. Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out the following: “In recent years we have implemented several projects that improve the speed, accessibility and quality of postal services. By opting out of the use of paper in the process of delivering registered items, we have become more customer-friendly and more environmentally friendly: customers can receive their items faster, while saving more than a tonne of paper has spared dozens of trees.”

Registered – signed for or insured items are delivered to the addressee against signature. These items are assigned a unique number in the global postal system, consisting of a 13-digit code with two letters at the beginning and at the end and digits in the middle, for example, AB123456789CD, and some of these items can be tracked in the countries that publish this code on relevant websites.

Latvijas Pasts has implemented a number of technological modernisation projects in recent years, while the most significant development projects in 2019 are planned in the area of improving the processing and delivery of items.
