To mark the 50th World Post Day, Latvijas Pasts holds a meeting of postcard sending enthusiasts

To celebrate the 50th World Post Day, Latvijas Pasts is holding a traditional meeting of Latvian postcard sending enthusiasts and participants of the international Postcrossing movement to provide insight into the current trends in the postal sector and the existing challenges faced by the industry. During the meeting, a personalised postage stamp and a postcard designed specially for the event will be presented. As usual, the postcrossers will be able to send postcards to a pen pal worldwide. The event is scheduled to take place at SPIIKIIZI, 17a Krišjāņa Valdemāra Street, Riga at 4 PM on the 10th of October 2019.

This year the celebration of the World Post Day is special, as this day is marked in the 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union for the 50th time. The sector’s holiday has been celebrated since the 9th October 1969 with the purpose to bring awareness to the post’s role in the everyday lives of people and businesses, as well as the contribution of this field to global social and economic development.

To mark the World Post Day, Latvijas Pasts traditionally brings together postcard sending enthusiasts, promoting the practice of sending postcards and attracting the attention of young people and collectors to this exciting hobby. This time the attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the challenges faced by the postal sector and the opportunities offered by the technology era, which has changed the development of postal companies all over the world in recent years.

As usual, the meeting will take place in a creative atmosphere, inviting everyone who likes to send and receive postcards from around the world to join in. Latvijas Pasts has prepared postcards of a special design and a personalised stamp, which every participant will be able to send to a pen pal in any country of the world.

Participation in the international Postcrossing movement can make a letter-box full of true surprises. A new participant can send his or her first postcard by getting registered on the website www.postcrossing.com and receiving the postal address of an unknown addressee. After this is done, the sender can be rest assured that he or she will get at least one postcard in return from a postcrosser who, perhaps, lives in a completely different part of the world. When the postcard has been received, it should be registered on www.postcrossing.com, and the search for the next postcard pen pal can begin.

The international Postcrossing movement involves over 778,500 people from more than 200 countries of the world. Residents of Latvia are also active postcrossers – their current number is over 3,360 people who have sent approximately 316,780 postcards. This means that Latvia is ranked 27th in the world in terms of the number of cards sent within the project.

Postcard sending enthusiasts and members of the global Postcrossing movement have been brought together at Latvijas Pasts since 2011, and this will be the 16th time they meet. Latvijas Pasts has also been a participant of the Postcrossing movement since 2010 – part of the postcards received can be viewed here.
