192 countries of the world will be celebrating the World Post Day for the 50th time on the 9th of October 2019

On Wednesday, the 9th of October 2019, the 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union, including Latvia, will mark the World Post Day for the 50th time. The Universal Postal Union was established in Berne, Switzerland on that day in 1874, and this is the second oldest international organisation in the world with its headquarters in Bern, the capital of Switzerland. Latvia was admitted to it on the 1st of October 1921 and its membership was restored on the 17th of June 1992. Latvijas Pasts will celebrate the World Post Day this year by greeting its nearly 3,800 employees during the sector’s holiday and holding a meeting of the Latvian participants of the international postcard sending movement Postcrossing, which has already become a tradition.

There are over 660,000 post offices operating in the 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union, with over a billion customers using a wide range of postal, electronic, financial and logistics services each year. Post offices worldwide have more than five million employees who handle an average of more than 320 billion letters and more than eight billion parcels per year.

Among the member countries of the Universal Postal Union Latvijas Pasts operates with more than 615 post offices and around 3,800 employees who process an average of 25,000 letters and 33,000 parcels and small packets daily.

“Offering greetings on the World Post Day, I would especially like to thank our employees for their work carried out in good faith and in a professional manner, and to thank every customer and business partner of the company for their trust, which helps us grow and evolve, keeping up with the times and wishes of our customers!” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

Along with the development of technology and changes in customer habits the use of postal services around the world is also changing, with the prevalence of traditional postal services decreasing and the importance of e-commerce growing rapidly. As a result, postal companies around the world now have to create new service niches in response to market developments.

The daily operations of Latvijas Pasts are closely related to customer service, which is why it is important to continue to offer the services geared to the demand. The company plans to improve the availability of postal services in the near future, automating a substantial part of the services and enhancing the remote customer support and self-service possibilities. The plan involves introducing self-checkouts at the post offices and equipping the call centre with virtual assistants, as well as developing a wide range of electronic services.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of celebrating the World Post Day together with the 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union. As usual, Latvijas Pasts is organising a meeting of Latvian postcard senders and participants of the international Postcrossing movement during this period, where everyone present will be able to send their message to an unknown pen pal. The event is scheduled to take place at SPIIKIIZI, 17a Krišjāņa Valdemāra Street, Riga at 4 PM on the 10th of October 2019.

The Universal Postal Union is the main organisation for the cooperation of postal service providers that helps to ensure a universal network enabling all 192 member countries to keep track of the developments related to postal products and services. The Union develops rules for international postal exchange and makes recommendations for increasing the volume of letters, parcels and financial services, as well as improving the quality of customer service. Latvia was admitted to the Universal Postal Union on the 1st of October 1921 and its membership was restored on the 17th of June 1992.
