Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp to mark the centenary of the Latvian National Armed Forces Staff Battalion

Latvijas Pasts has released a new stamp and a cover to mark the centenary of the establishment of the Latvian National Armed Forces (NAF) Staff Battalion. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place at Riga Motor Museum, 8 Sergeja Eizenšteina Street, Riga, from 10 AM to 6 PM on the 10th of December 2019.

The face value of the stamp NAF Staff Battalion – 100 is € 0.50, which corresponds to the cost of sending an ordinary Class B letter within Latvia, and its print run is 100,000 copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by a special cover with a print run of 1,000 copies. The new philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja.

The philatelic releases feature soldiers of the NAF Staff Battalion Honour Guard and elements of their uniform: a sleeve formation patch made on a sand-coloured base using embroidery technique, as well as a sword.

The NAF Staff Battalion is a unit that performs a wide range of tasks, primarily related to maintaining the NAF communication and information systems, providing the Honour Guard at the Freedom Monument and Riga Castle, as well as ensuring the Armed Forces and State Protocol ceremonies.

The unit was established in 1919 as the headquarters company of the Commander’s Staff, but its structure and tasks have changed many times over the years, while one of the peacetime missions – ensuring the Honour Guard at the Freedom Monument and Riga Castle – has remained. It is remarkable that the NAF Staff Battalion is the only unit that was restored in 1992 under its historic name.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for January 2020.
