Latvijas Pasts handles the 100th postal item transit aircraft

Latvijas Pasts has already accepted the 100th postal item transit cargo charter aircraft from China, processing and forwarding items from the world’s second largest trading platform Alibaba to various recipient countries. Latvijas Pasts has been cooperating with Cainiao, a logistics company of Alibaba Group, since autumn 2017, and during this time the volume of postal item transit air cargo has increased significantly: the inbound postal item transit cargo of Latvijas Pasts in the cargo structure of Riga International Airport accounted for 6.7% in 2019.

Latvijas Pasts initiated cooperation with Alibaba Group, accepting the first postal item transit cargo charter aircraft in August 2017. Since 2017 Latvijas Pasts has handled 100 transit cargo airplanes and processed 180,000 transit cargo bags and nearly 80 million transit postal items, delivering them to more than 10 recipient countries.

“We started cooperation with Alibaba Group on our own initiative, proactively creating new service niches related to modern postal service segments and the development of e-commerce. To be able to act as a full-fledged partner of Cainiao, we invested a lot of effort in original and innovative solutions, both for data exchange and for the fastest possible processing and further delivery of items. Latvijas Pasts has become a significant player in transit cargo processing in the region and this is reflected in the overall results of the Latvian transport industry,” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

In the structure of the cargo handled at Riga International Airport in 2019, 6.7% was made up of the inbound postal item transit cargo arriving at Latvijas Pasts. Along with the attraction of transit cargo, the net turnover of Latvijas Pasts has also increased substantially in recent years, reaching historically the highest turnover of EUR 89.1 million in 2018, which was 13.5 million more than the previous largest turnover of the company: EUR 75.6 million in 2017.

Latvijas Pasts accepted 13 postal transit cargo airplanes from China in the five months of the first year of cooperation from August 2017, 34 airplanes in 2018, 50 airplanes in 2019 and already three airplanes in January 2020.

As the transit project continues to develop, active work is ongoing to improve logistics efficiency and data quality solutions and enhance collaboration with customs and other authorities concerned.

In 2018 Latvijas Pasts received recognition of the World Customs Organization for the provision of exceptional services to the international customs community and the Award for Consentaneous Team Work & Effective Supporting within the transit project from Cainiao, a company of Alibaba Group.
