Delivery of postal items to foreign countries is still limited and may be delayed

As international passenger transport is still allowed only at a minimum level and with various additional conditions due to measures to contain the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, the exchange of postal items with foreign countries is also delayed. Any timelines and quality standards for delivery of postal items have now been suspended at international level and are not in effect. Deliveries are also hampered by congestion of items and queues at international transit airports. Latvijas Pasts accepts items for sending to recipients abroad and dispatches them from Latvia as soon as a suitable mode of transportation and route to the specific country is found. In these exceptional circumstances Latvijas Pasts urges customers to be understanding and to take into account the longer delivery time of postal items, which cannot be determined precisely in all cases.

International passenger traffic between most countries is still suspended or restricted as a result of the measures taken worldwide to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, which has led to significant restrictions and delays in the exchange of postal items with foreign countries. This is linked to the fact that most international items are delivered by passenger aircraft, which currently have insufficient capacity for postal items, so any other modes of delivery are being sought, including by land, water and rail.

Deliveries are also delayed due to congestion of items and queues at international transit airports, from where they are forwarded to other recipient countries. In addition, delivery conditions that prevent items from reaching recipients on time may be present in each individual country. For these reasons any timelines and quality standards for delivery of postal items have now been suspended at international level and are not in effect.

“The logistics processes of Latvijas Pasts are currently very complex, and our employees work under conditions of increased load, planning how to deliver items from Latvia to other countries. Due to the limited and suspended passenger traffic, postal establishments in practically all countries are simultaneously looking for alternatives to item delivery and are re-planning transport routes. The changes are very rapid, and often a chance to send postal items to a country appears or disappears within a few hours, so I am very grateful to the continuous work of our colleagues, following every opportunity to deliver items faster, more conveniently and cost-efficiently,” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

Latvijas Pasts currently provides deliveries to practically all countries of the world, so items to be sent abroad are accepted at post offices. It must be taken into account, however, that route planning takes longer: items that cannot be dispatched immediately are stored in the sorting centre of Latvijas Pasts and sent as soon as it becomes possible.

Delays in item delivery concern all types of postal items. Express mail is delivered as a matter of priority, yet delays in this segment may also happen.

Latvijas Pasts has created a special frequently asked question-answer section about the company’s operations in the emergency situation, which is available in latvian language in the News section of www.pasts.lv and is regularly updated. For questions about the status of specific items, Latvijas Pasts asks you to contact the Customer Centre on +371 27008001, +371 67008001, info@pasts.lv or by writing in the social network profiles of Latvijas Pasts: twitter.com/latvijas_pasts or facebook.com/latvijas.pasts
