Demand for services of Latvijas Pasts parcel locker network grows substantially – the company increases its capacity by 15%

Developing the parcel locker network of Latvijas Pasts, the company has increased the network’s total capacity by 15%, replacing the existing lockers with newer and more modern ones or completely reinstalling them in some places. Over the last three months – in March, April and May – the demand for item collection from parcel lockers increased by an average of 40%, and the number of items redirected from post offices to lockers also grew during this period. The project of modernisation of the parcel locker network continues, planning to increase its capacity, as well as to purchase outdoor parcel lockers.

In the process of modernisation and development of the parcel locker network, Latvijas Pasts has replaced 13 parcel lockers throughout the country and installed two new parcel terminals in Riga – in the shopping centre Galerija Centrs at 16 Audēju Street and in the shopping centre Maxima at 143 Biķernieku Street, thus increasing the total capacity of the parcel locker network by 15%.

Along with the development of e-commerce and the change in people’s habits, including due to the impact of COVID-19, the demand for parcel locker services has also increased significantly in recent months: in March, April and May 2020 customers used parcel locker services by 40% more on average than in January and February. In order to maximise the number of customers who can receive their items at the parcel lockers and to prevent item accumulation, leading to congestion, Latvijas Pasts has introduced a three-day period of storing items in the parcel terminals.

“Demand for parcel locker services shows that we are moving in the right direction – this is demonstrated not only by the growing demand for parcel locker services, but also by the fact that customers who used to receive items at post offices are now increasingly using the redirection service in the mobile app of Latvijas Pasts to collect items from a parcel locker which is the most convenient to them,” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

In the period from March through May 2020 the number of the postal items redirected from post offices to parcel lockers reached almost 2,000 items. Latvijas Pasts plans to continue the modernisation of its parcel locker network, not only by increasing its capacity, but also by supplementing it with outdoor parcel lockers, thus further expanding customers’ options for receiving items through the channels offered by Latvijas Pasts.

Latvijas Pasts acquired the parcel locker network in August 2019, significantly expanding the item delivery options. As a result more than 600 post offices, 1,200 postmen and 100 couriers of Latvijas Pasts, as well as a network of over 50 Circle-K fuel stations, all rendering item delivery services, were supplemented with 61 parcel lockers throughout the country, which are currently being further developed and modernised.
