In August 2020 Latvijas Pasts opens its first outdoor parcel locker; procurement for 60 new parcel lockers announced

In August 2020 Latvijas Pasts added the first outdoor parcel locker to its parcel locker network. The new locker is located next to the shopping centre Rīga Plaza, 71 Mūkusalas Street, Riga. To expand and modernise the parcel locker network, Latvijas Pasts has announced procurement for the purchase of 60 new parcel lockers, while continuing to expand the capacity of the existing parcel locker network and replacing the lockers with newer generation models under the parcel locker purchase contract with the venture capital fund Baltcap.

In August Latvijas Pasts installed its first outdoor parcel locker – it is located in Riga, next to the shopping centre Rīga Plaza at Mūkusalas Street 71 and is available to customers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Thus Latvijas Pasts has started a substantial expansion of its own parcel network, intending to supplement it with both indoor and outdoor parcel lockers and significantly improving customers’ options for receiving and sending items.

“With the first outdoor parcel locker of Latvijas Pasts we outline a clear direction for increasingly dynamic development, ensuring ever better and higher quality service to our customers. A year ago, when we purchased the parcel locker network, we promised that this was only the first step in further expanding of the network and offering of new services, and although COVID-19 slowed down our plans a little, we are now purposefully moving forward on a clearly defined path of modernisation and long-term development,” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

Latvijas Pasts has launched procurement for the purchase of 60 new parcel lockers, envisaging their gradual placement both this year and in 2021. At the same time Latvijas Pasts continues to expand and modernise the existing parcel locker network, enlarging the total network capacity and replacing parcel lockers with newer generation models.

These activities are being implemented under the contract with the venture capital fund Baltcap, from which Latvijas Pasts purchased an already functioning parcel locker network in August 2019: the contract sets forth that Baltcap shall replace the parcel lockers at its own expense. It is planned that the modernisation will be completed during August, resulting in replacement of more than 30 parcel lockers with a newer generation of more spacious lockers throughout Latvia.

In less than a year since the purchase of the network the demand for receiving and sending items through Latvijas Pasts parcel lockers has significantly increased, with the total turnover of items in Latvijas Pasts parcel locker network growing by more than 40% in March – June.

Latvijas Pasts acquired the parcel locker network in August 2019, significantly expanding the item delivery and sending options, which are ensured by more than 600 post offices, postmen and couriers, as well as a network of Circle-K fuel stations and over 60 parcel lockers throughout Latvia.
