Thanks to the use of 11 motor scooters Latvijas Pasts has managed to improve the speed of item delivery in several locations in Latvia this season

Latvijas Pasts uses 11 motor scooters – nine electric motor scooters and two internal combustion scooters – to deliver items in several parts of Latvia during this year’s warm season. Scooters have a large and convenient load compartment, allowing them to carry the maximum number of postal items, and their use allows Latvijas Pasts to speed up the delivery of postal items and make it more efficient, while improving the comfort of postmen and saving financial resources. Latvijas Pasts plans to use scooters for postal item delivery also in the future and, depending on the need, to increase their number gradually.

Latvijas Pasts tested motor scooters in the summer of 2019 to find out how this convenient and compact vehicle can operate in certain areas of Latvia. As the assessment of the test results showed that using scooters was advantageous to Latvijas Pasts both financially and from the point of view of the delivery organisation, the company purchased 11 scooters. Nine electric motor scooters are used for postal item delivery in Daugavpils, Lielvārde, Malta, Mārupe, Piņķi, Rēzekne, Riga, Sigulda, Stende and Strenči, while two internal combustion scooters are used in Jelgava and Krāslava.

Getting around by scooter is convenient, compact, economical and environmentally friendly – it helps to quicker cover the daily walking and cycling routes of postmen and manoeuvre in areas where this is not possible for a postman who uses a car for delivery. Scooter delivery of correspondence replaces the daily workload of an average of three pedestrian postmen and/or cyclist postmen in terms of labour resources. In turn, compared to the delivery of postal items by car, the use of scooters makes it possible to deliver correspondence by about 30% faster.

The introduction of motorised vehicles in the delivery of items not only ensures more efficient receipt of items, but also significantly reduces the physical workload of postmen. The scooters have a large and comfortable load compartment, which allows them to carry the maximum number of postal items.

Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out: “Scooters have made the daily routine of our employees substantially faster and more comfortable. Their use also saves the time of other colleagues – pedestrian postmen; for example, the postman’s scooter in Sigulda is used not only to fulfil the direct delivery obligations, but additionally in the daily work of other postmen in order to bring the needed postal items, which would otherwise have to be collected by the postman from the post office by going there on foot. This allows for speeding up the total time for delivery of correspondence.”

Latvijas Pasts plans to use scooters for postal item delivery in the future as well, but depending on the need, the company will increase the scooter fleet gradually. Scooters can be used as delivery vehicles for an average of five to six months a year, but on an annual basis they are cheaper than cars.

A wide range of vehicles are being tested and used for item delivery around the world that correspond to the geographical characteristics of the specific area, the amount of items, the habits of the population and the intensity of the traffic flow.

In recent years Latvijas Pasts has been actively implementing various projects to enhance the postal services and quality and improve the postal item delivery processes.
