Marking the World Post Day, Latvijas Pasts extends its greetings for the sector’s holiday and urges compliance with precautionary measures

On Friday, the 9th of October 2020, the 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union, including Latvia, will mark the World Post Day for the 51st time. The Universal Postal Union, which is the second oldest international organisation in the world, was established on that day in 1874. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the postal industry has faced significant challenges and changes in 2020; therefore, in honour of the World Post Day, Latvijas Pasts once again expresses its gratitude to every postal employee who provides postal services to people throughout Latvia with a great sense of responsibility every day during these tense times. At the same time, Latvijas Pasts urges customers to be understanding and, when assessing the need for visiting a post office, to strictly observe all security measures.

There are over 650,000 post offices with 5.3 million employees operating in the 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union, providing over a billion customers with a wide range of postal, electronic, financial and logistics services even in the most remote regions each year. The infrastructure of the postal sector is an essential link with the world’s population – now, as never before, this can be clearly seen, as the spread of the COVID-19 virus has limited people’s social life, but postal establishments must be able to do a quality job so that people can get the postal services they need.

Among the member countries of the Universal Postal Union Latvijas Pasts operates with more than 600 post offices and around 3,200 employees who process an average of 58,000 letter-post items and 22,000 parcels and small packets daily.

Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out: “The postal sector has become stronger in this period of change, and we – Latvijas Pasts – have also not stopped our operations even for a day despite numerous challenges: we continue to deliver items and provide other necessary services. I am proud of the employees of our company who do their job with courage and dedication, so I take this opportunity once again to say thank you to all the employees of our company and also to greet all our customers on the professional holiday of the postal sector!”

During this period of change postal employees continue to work to ensure the movement of items, while postal establishments introduce new services and expand their offer, transferring some services to the digital environment and providing them as remotely as possible. At the same time, it should be kept in mind that the postal sector retains a significant proportion of direct contact on a daily basis, as postal workers often lend a helping hand to those in need, especially in rural areas.

This year the World Post Day is celebrated for the 51st time in the 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union. The Universal Postal Union is the main organisation for the cooperation of postal service providers that helps to ensure a universal network enabling all 192 member countries to keep track of the new developments related to postal products and services. The Union develops rules for international postal exchange and makes recommendations for increasing the volume of letters, parcels and financial services, as well as improving the quality of customer service. Latvia was admitted to the Universal Postal Union on the 1st of October 1921 and its membership was restored on the 17th of June 1992.

Currently, in the conditions of the COVID-19 crisis, Latvijas Pasts provides all services: receipt and dispatch of letter-post items and postal parcel items, press subscriptions, receipt of money orders and pensions, payment of utility bills and other bills, payments into the Postal Settlement System account, etc.

Latvijas Pasts urges its customers to be understanding and, when assessing the need for visiting a post office, to strictly observe all security measures: to make maximum use of remote options for receiving the services, for example, by redirecting items via the Latvijas Pasts mobile app to parcel lockers or applying for a visit to the post office remotely; not to visit the post office if they have symptoms of the disease; not to crowd and to keep a distance of two metres in the post office; to wait for their turn in the queue outside the post office whenever possible; as well as to use personal protective equipment and to practice proper hygiene.
