International postal item flow is still limited due to COVID-19 – delivery timelines at the global level are not in force

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the delivery of postal items worldwide. The established security measures have reduced international passenger transportation, which is also used to carry postal items, thus hampering their exchange with foreign countries. Deliveries are also affected by congestion and queues at international transit airports, as well as possible restrictions in individual countries, leading to delays in deliveries to final addressees. Any timelines and quality standards for delivery of postal items have now been suspended at the international level and are not in effect. Latvijas Pasts accepts items for sending to recipients abroad and dispatches them as soon as a suitable mode of transportation is found. Latvijas Pasts urges customers to be understanding and to take into account longer delivery times.

International passenger traffic between many countries is still suspended or restricted as a result of the measures taken worldwide to contain the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, which is causing restrictions and/or delays in the exchange of postal items with some foreign countries also today.

Deliveries are also delayed due to congestion of items and queues at international transit airports, from where they are forwarded to other recipient countries. In addition, delivery conditions that prevent items from reaching recipients on time may be present in each individual country. For these reasons any timelines and quality standards for delivery of postal items have now been suspended at the international level and are not in effect.

Kristaps Krūmiņš, Member of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out: “In this changing situation, we are constantly looking for alternative ways and routes of delivery of postal items so that they reach their destination as soon as possible. For example, we have observed that items are stored for a long time at some international transit airports due to the security measures in place. Therefore, to avoid this, we are looking for and finding completely new delivery solutions combining different routes, including land and water. Most importantly – deliveries abroad are carried out, but it must be taken into account that route planning and deliveries take longer.”

The company has compiled up-to-date information on the possibilities of sending and delivering postal items abroad during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is available on the Latvijas Pasts website www.pasts.lv under the section Postage > COVID-19 impacts on delivery services and is regularly updated.

Latvijas Pasts urges customers to be understanding and to take into account longer delivery times of postal items during the COVID-19 pandemic.
