New parcel lockers for faster and easier pick-up of postal items are now available at three more Riga post offices

New parcel lockers for faster receipt of items have been installed at three more post offices in Riga: Riga post office No. 11 at 20 Marijas Street, Riga post office No. 21 at 7 Ulbrokas Street and Riga post office No. 39 at 211 Brīvības gatve. These parcel lockers are available for delivery of items according to the opening hours of each post office. Continuing the placement of parcel lockers for more efficient receipt of items at the busiest post offices in Riga and the region with the largest number of items to be delivered, another nine new parcel lockers will be available to customers next to post offices or in their premises in the coming weeks. The new parcel lockers at the post offices will initially be intended only for the delivery of items, and the item dispatch function will be activated in them later, as the flow of inbound items becomes steadier.

To reduce the workload of post offices and the need to use the labour of postal operators in delivering items, new parcel lockers for more efficient and faster collection of items are now also available at Riga post offices No. 11, 21 and 39. As the parcel lockers are located in the premises of the post offices, customers have access to them for the pick-up of items during the opening hours of the post offices: every working day from 8 AM to 7 PM.

As COVID-19 continues to spread, the negative effects of the virus have a significant impact on both the flow of inbound items and the provision of services at post offices. The flow of international items is very uneven, with a large volume of items from abroad often incoming at the same time, which arrive at the post offices after processing in the sorting centre of Latvijas Pasts and which have to be delivered to a large number of customers simultaneously. At the same time the possibilities for serving customers at post offices are decreasing: the number of people allowed to be served on site and, consequently, the number of cash register systems has been reduced at several dozens of post offices due to the security requirements.

To address this issue and ensure the fastest possible delivery of postal items, Latvijas Pasts has started the installation of 18 new parcel lockers at the busiest post offices in Riga and the region. Currently the parcel lockers offering the pick-up of items are available next to Riga post office No. 83 at 1a Dzirciema Street, at the post centre Jelgava at 2b Katoļu Street, at Ogre post office No. 1 at 38 Brīvības Street, next to Riga post office No. 57 at 2 Prūšu Street, in the premises of the shopping centre Rimi at 31 Daugavas Street, Mārupe, next to Riga post office No. 29 at 9 Ruses Street, as well as at Riga post offices No. 11, 21 and 39. In the near future parcel lockers will also be placed next to other post offices or in their premises, such as Jēkabpils post office No. 1 and Riga post offices No. 35 and 58.

Each of the new parcel lockers, which, based on the technical parameters of the particular post office, is located either in the lobby of the post office or in its customer area, has different working hours: it will either be available around the clock or according to the opening hours of the respective post office.

The capacity of each of the new parcel terminals allows it to hold about 100 items at a time, and the customer will receive a text message regarding the pick-up of the item on the mobile phone if this number is indicated on the item.

Therefore it is important to include information with a correct and functioning mobile number of the addressee, adding it to the recipient’s address.

The customers of the post offices where the parcel lockers will be located are asked to carefully read the text of the received invitation messages in order to understand whether the item can be received at the post office or should be collected from the parcel locker of the post office. Also when receiving a repeated text message invitation, please make sure that the place of receipt of the item has not been changed to the parcel locker – this will be done if a compartment in the parcel locker has become vacant. In order to ensure the smoothest possible circulation of items at the post offices, we encourage customers to collect items from parcel lockers as soon as possible so that other customers can receive their items too.

Taking into account the need to deliver as many items as possible, the parcel lockers located at post offices will initially be intended only for the pick-up of items – the item dispatch function will be activated as soon as the item delivery flow at the post offices becomes more homogeneous.

The total number of Latvijas Pasts parcel lockers after the installation of all new lockers will amount to 80, and additional procurement has been announced for another 120 new parcel lockers.
