More than 52,000 items collected at Latvijas Pasts post offices on the specially organised item delivery day

On Saturday, the 8th of May 2021, which was announced by Latvijas Pasts as the item delivery day, customers picked up more than 52,000 items at the post offices. Since the Christmas period last year, which traditionally demonstrated an increase in the number of items and during which the number of items delivered in one day reached a record figure of 42,000 units, the number of items at Latvijas Pasts has continued to grow steadily. Currently about 50,000 items on average are delivered at the post offices of Latvijas Pasts on a working day, but a significant number of items at the post offices tend to accumulate without customers collecting them, thus hindering both the acceptance and processing of subsequent items and their delivery to other customers.

The amount of inbound postal items at some of the busiest post offices currently exceeds even the number of items in the Christmas period, when it traditionally doubles at the very least. Unclaimed items accumulate at the post offices, hindering the processing of other items and their delivery to addressees as quickly as possible. Therefore, Latvijas Pasts invited customers to collect their items at the post offices on the 8th of May in order to reduce the number of items accumulated there and speed up the movement of items.

“The item delivery day can be considered to have been successfully implemented, as the total number of items delivered at post offices exceeded 52,000 units. We are grateful to all the customers who visited the post office on this day and collected their items, because we had mobilised all our labour and additional resources for this process, taking into account the significant number of items arriving and being delivered at the post offices. Although the 8th of May was a transferred working day, for many it was a day off anyway, so we are glad that customers were active in vising the post offices, and the number of items accumulated there was substantially reduced,” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

The most items on the 8th of May – more than 27,000 – were delivered in Riga and the region, while customers in Kurzeme and Zemgale picked up over 7,000 items, in Latgale – over 6,000 items and in Vidzeme – nearly 4,000 items.

The volume of inbound items at Latvijas Pasts has increased significantly this year. In May 2021 Latvijas Pasts delivers about 50,000 items to customers every working day on average, which is more than the average in December last year, during the busiest period for postal establishments, when about 30,000 items were delivered per day, while a record of 42,000 items per day was reached at the end of December. Already in April 2021 the average number of items delivered at the post offices was about 40,000 items per day.

When items accumulate at the post offices, the processing and acceptance of the next inbound items and their delivery to other customers are hindered.

As COVID-19 continues to spread, the negative effects of the virus have a significant impact on both the flow of inbound items and the provision of services at post offices. The flow of international items is very uneven, with a large volume of items from abroad often incoming at the same time, which arrive at the post offices after processing in the sorting centre of Latvijas Pasts and which have to be delivered to a large number of customers simultaneously. At the same time the possibilities for serving customers at post offices are decreasing: the number of people allowed to be served on site and, consequently, the number of cash register systems has been reduced at several dozens of post offices due to the security requirements.
