Over 8 months of 2021 Latvijas Pasts served more transit cargo aircraft than in the whole of 2020

Until the 31st of August 2021, in the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, Latvijas Pasts served a total of 301 postal transit cargo aircraft, processing and forwarding items from the world’s second largest trading platform Alibaba to various recipient countries in cooperation with Cainiao, a logistics company of Alibaba Group. Latvijas Pasts serves more than 30 transit aircraft per month on average and processes approximately 3 million transit postal items. In eight months of this year, the number of the transit charter aircraft serviced by Latvijas Pasts was higher than in the whole of 2020, when 219 cargo transit aircraft were accepted.

Although the crisis caused by COVID-19 made it difficult to receive transit items from the beginning of 2020 and the flow of these items reduced significantly, it has been rapidly speeding up since the middle of the last year. In 2020 Latvijas Pasts served a total of 219 postal transit aircraft, but in the first eight months of this year – as many as 301 aircraft, ensuring the processing and forwarding of such items to more than ten different recipient countries.

Latvijas Pasts processes about 3,000,000 postal transit items per month on average from more than 30 accepted postal transit charter aircraft. The multiplier effect created by the cooperation between Latvijas Pasts and Cainiao in Latvia is not only the number of accepted aircraft at Riga International Airport, but also the number of truck rides that ensure the forwarding of transit items: their number was 550 in 2020, whereas in January-August 2021 the delivery of transit postal items processed by Latvijas Pasts to the recipients was implemented by 600 truck rides. Thanks to the transit postal items accepted by Latvijas Pasts, the cargo agents operating in the airport area also get employed.

Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out: “We initiated the transit project four years ago as a measure to diversify the company’s operations and share risks, taking account of the global changes seen as a result of technological development, including those related to the flow of postal items. The time of the pandemic clearly demonstrates the correctness of our proactively initiated cooperation, as a significant share of Latvijas Pasts revenue is made of transit services, which was facilitated by the expansion of this business niche at the end of 2020: since January 2021 Latvijas Pasts has been providing transit services to 14 different countries offering each of them unique terms of cooperation and various products which they require.”

Over four years, Latvijas Pasts has become an important part of the international logistics system of Cainiao, a company of the global trading platform Alibaba Group, offering services such as data exchange and integration, customs clearance, detailed sorting and processing of various types of items, further delivery, individual solutions and products to the postal establishments of the recipient countries.

Latvijas Pasts initiated cooperation with Alibaba Group, accepting the first postal item transit cargo charter aircraft in August 2017. Continuing the development of the postal transit item project, Latvijas Pasts keeps working at expanding the number of item destination countries, creating innovative products and offering an increasingly diverse range of services.
