The 9th of October is World Post Day – this autumn also marks the 100th anniversary of Latvia’s accession to the Universal Postal Union

On Saturday, the 9th of October 2021, the 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union, including Latvia, will mark World Post Day. The Universal Postal Union, which is the second oldest international organisation in the world, was established on that day in 1874. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Latvia’s accession to the organisation.

World Post Day is celebrated on the 9th of October in all 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union, including Latvia, and this year marks the 100th anniversary of Latvia’s accession to the organisation as a full member. Latvia was admitted to the Universal Postal Union, which is the second oldest international organisation in the world, on the 1st of October 1921, after the de jure recognition of the country, and Latvia’s membership was renewed on the 17th June 1992, after the restoration of the country’s sovereignty.

The postal sector holiday is traditionally celebrated with the aim of raising awareness of the role of post in the daily lives of people and businesses, while the global theme of this year’s World Post Day is Innovate to Recover!, highlighting the challenges faced by the postal industry around the world over the past year. Latvijas Pasts has not only been able to adapt to the difficulties in the circumstances caused by the virus but also to ensure daily delivery and customer service throughout Latvia, without interrupting its operations for a day since the beginning of the pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic Latvijas Pasts introduced quick solutions for exchanging items with international postal companies, opened a fully automated item sorting line, created new models for item delivery, proactively ensured a significant increase in the number of postal transit items and fast processing of such items, and developed a modern and convenient tool for the customs clearance of postal items originating from third countries.

“None of these achievements would have been possible without the dedication and involvement of our employees. The pandemic period is considered to be the most challenging period for Latvijas Pasts so far, during which the company, thanks to the perseverance and cohesion of its employees, continued to provide postal services to customers throughout the country without interrupting its operations for a moment, being able to process the ever-increasing volumes of items, to comply with the strict security requirements for on-site service at post offices and to deliver items to customers in the most remote places of Latvia every working day. I greet all the employees of the postal industry on the holiday, and once again I express my respect and gratitude,” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

World Post Day is celebrated for the 52nd time this year. There are around 656,000 post offices operating in the postal establishments worldwide, with over a billion customers using a wide range of postal, electronic, financial and logistics services each year. Post offices all over the world have more than five million employees who handle an average of more than 280 billion letters and more than 15 billion parcels per year.

The Universal Postal Union is the main organisation for the cooperation of postal service providers that helps to ensure a universal network enabling all member countries to keep track of the news and developments related to postal products and services.
