Impact of COVID-19 on Latvijas Pasts: The provision of services and deliveries in major cities are particularly affected at the moment

As the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the operations of Latvijas Pasts continues and employees of various occupations, especially postmen and post office operators involved in item deliveries and provision of postal services, take sickness absence, the operations of post offices and delivery possibilities in major cities are currently most affected. This is particularly noticeable in Riga as well as in Vidzeme and Zemgale. Latvijas Pasts asks customers to be aware of the impact of external circumstances beyond the control of Latvijas Pasts – it is expected that next week the opening hours of several post offices in Riga and other cities will have to be significantly reduced, as post office employees and administrative staff will be out helping to deliver items.

Latvijas Pasts currently lacks more than 200 employees involved in the provision of postal services and items deliveries, as while some employees recover, others get sick at the same time or become close contacts. Problems and impact on the work of other structural units are caused by the fact that the job duties of the employees on sickness absence and of contact persons are split up among healthy employees in the same or other structural units; thus the overall service provision and delivery processes are hampered and hindered almost throughout the system of Latvijas Pasts.

It is expected that due to the rapid increase in the number of sick employees and contacts in Riga and its surroundings as well as in other major cities in Vidzeme and Zemgale, next week, starting from the 7th of February 2022, the opening hours of several post offices will have to be significantly reduced, as post office employees and administrative staff will have to be out delivering postal items in order to substitute sick colleagues. If necessary, some post offices may be temporarily closed and their functions transferred to other, operating post offices.

Latvijas Pasts asks customers to show understanding for the critical conditions caused by the pandemic. Despite the difficult situation, employees of Latvijas Pasts do their best to provide the necessary services and deliver items, but urge customers to take note of possible inconvenience and delays.
