192 countries, including Latvia, are celebrating World Post Day on the 9th of October 2022
On Sunday, the 9th of October 2022, the 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union, including Latvia, will mark World Post Day. The Universal Postal Union was established in the Swiss capital Bern on that day in 1874, and this is the second oldest international organisation in the world. The postal industry is unrivalled in its ability to provide services to anyone and anywhere, including in the most remote corners of the world, and it employs 5.3 people.

The 9th of October is the date when World Post Day is celebrated in all 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union, including Latvia. Latvia was admitted to the Universal Postal Union, which is the second oldest international organisation in the world, on the 1st of October 1921, after the de jure recognition of the country, and Latvia’s membership was renewed on the 17th June 1992, after the restoration of the country’s sovereignty.

The postal sector holiday is traditionally celebrated with the aim of raising awareness of the role of post in the daily lives of people and businesses, while the global theme of this year’s World Post Day is Post for Planet! A number of measures have been committed by member countries of the Universal Postal Union to reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by postal activities around the world, as well as to increase their resilience against climate change-related disruptions.

Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of , points out: “There are a number of important issues of long-term prospects that have been temporarily overshadowed by the current turmoil this year, but such issues have not disappeared from the agenda of the global postal industry for a moment. Our company is working on developing sustainability as one of its most pressing issues. By digitising various processes, we have reduced the consumption of paper documents and saved natural resources, but we expect the biggest effect in reducing greenhouse gases in the future to be in the transport section, as the issue of the sustainability of the chosen transport will become increasingly important every day.”

World Post Day is celebrated for the 53rd time this year. Globally, postal establishments provide a wide range of logistical, electronic and financial services to approximately 1.5 billion people each day. The postal network around the world consists of about 650,000 post offices with 5.3 million employees. The postal industry is unrivalled in its ability to provide services to anyone and anywhere, including in the most remote corners of the world.

The Universal Postal Union is the main organisation for the cooperation of postal service providers that helps to ensure a universal network enabling all member countries to keep track of the news and developments related to postal products and services.
