1,900 kg of socks have been donated in the Knitting campaign for the support of Ukraine: The campaign will continue until the end of 2022
The initiators of the Knitting (Adījumi) campaign wish to thank Latvian needlewomen for the huge response, donating their knitted socks to the defenders of Ukraine! A total of 1,900 kilograms of knitwear, or approximately 19,000 pairs of socks, have been donated during the past month. As a result of the overwhelming response and the need to continue providing support to both Ukrainian soldiers and medics at the front, as well as refugees, the campaign has been extended until the end of 2022.

The initiators of the Knitting campaign invited Latvian knitters to donate knitwear to Ukrainian soldiers, handing over knitted items for defenders of Ukraine free of charge at all Latvijas Pasts post offices from the 20th of September to the 23rd of October 2022. The items were then delivered to the recipients in cooperation with the association Tavi draugi.

“During the autumn campaign, we have knitted, collected and sent 19 pallets of knitted items to Ukraine – that is, about 1,900 kilograms or about 19,000 pairs of socks. The socks knitted in protective colours went to the front, while the coloured ones were given to the refugees who were freezing on the Russian-Latvian border. As we hear about the destroyed cities in Ukraine that have been left without heating or electricity, coupled with the cold taking hold, there is no doubt that our help is still very much needed. The thicker wool socks in sizes 37-45 will be useful for everyday wear in cold homes or for warming up while the boots soaked in trenches are drying, and the thinner socks with longer legs are ideal for wearing with combat boots to prevent rubbing and pinching. Knitted gloves and fingerless gloves will also come in handy,” Lauma Neimane, one of the initiators of the campaign and a representative of the association Mēs Iecavai, points out.

Thanks to the extensive Latvijas Pasts network, the Knitting campaign is currently the only one in which it is possible to collect knitwear throughout Latvia and the knitters can drop off the items at the place closest to their home – at any post office. There is no charge for sending knitwear donated to support Ukraine, and the only request is to indicate the following text on the packet with the knitted items to be sent: Akcija Adījumi, EKSPRESPASTS, Ziemeļu iela 10, Mārupes novads (Knitting campaign, EKSPRESPASTS, 10 Ziemeļu Street, Mārupe Municipality). Latvijas Pasts coordinates the delivery centrally, accepting the knitwear at all post offices and delivering it to the association Tavi draugi, located at 50 Ventspils Street, Riga, which then transports the items to Ukraine.

The 100% wool yarn produced by the company Limbažu tīne will be available at an affordable price in the regional and Riga post offices of Latvijas Pasts, which are located in the shopping centres Akropole Alfa, Akropole Rīga, Origo and Spice, at least until the end of November.

Several sock knitting campaigns in support of Ukraine are taking place in Latvia at the moment. Thanks to everyone who organises them! The association Tavi draugi informs you that it is ready to cooperate with the coordinators of other campaigns and hand over the necessary part of the collected knitwear to them in order to promptly consolidate full cargo in cases when the vehicle is due to depart, but there is still empty space in the load.

We can accomplish more together! We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported and will support the Knitting campaign!

The Knitting campaign’s initiator, coordinator and distributor of the information regarding its progress on TV, in the press, on the radio and on social networks (websites for needlewomen, which have around 27,000 members!) is the public organisation Mēs Iecavai
