Paying with a VISA payment card is now available to Latvijas Pasts customers

To keep pace with changing customer habits and society's growing need for cashless payments along with the possibility of making payments and purchases remotely, VISA payment debit cards have been made available to customers of the Postal Settlement System (PSS) provided by Latvijas Pasts starting from April 2023. At the same time, the Latvijas Pasts Pay mobile app is up and running.

Until now, a PSS account holder could receive salary, pension, benefits and other payments, transfer funds to private and business accounts with post offices and credit institutions in Latvia and abroad, deposit and withdraw cash from his or her account, and pay rent, utility bills and other expenses, but could only do this at the post office. As of now, a debit card linked to PNS will be available, which can be used to pay at points of sale, make online purchases (if the card is registered for secure transactions (VISA Secure) on the Internet), and withdraw cash from any ATM.

Another new innovation is the mobile app Latvijas Pasts Pay, which will enable customers to manage funds using an account with Latvijas Pasts and a VISA payment card. With this service, customers can make secure payments at points of sale and online, request balance statements, order virtual and physical cards, freeze lost cards, set daily and monthly limits for each card, monitor expenses, transaction history and reports for a specified period of time, and receive instant notifications about expenses after each payment.

“Until recently, Latvijas Pasts served as a one-stop agency, where customers could met several needs at the same time, such as sending letters, shopping and paying bills. Nowadays, however, a large proportion of financial services have moved to the digital environment. This is something that every modern company has to take into consideration, keeping up with demand, responding to changing customer habits and providing services that make everyday life easier for customers,” points out Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts.

Customers will be able to choose between a payment card that is more suitable if they need to withdraw cash from an ATM, and a virtual card if they only need to make payments at points of sale and online. The PNS card offers the same advantages as any modern bank card: the possibility of contactless payments without inserting the card into the POS terminal and without entering the PIN code, transferring salaries, pensions, benefits and other funds to the account, etc.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with the payment service provider Wallester

“We are honoured to be a valued partner and are excited to provide our cutting-edge solution to help facilitate the organization of this project. At Wallester, we have dedicated significant time and resources to ensure that Latvijas Pasts can implement their idea successfully. As a customer-centric organization, Wallester and Latvijas Pasts are committed to delivering tailored solutions that meet the needs of individuals. We feel a sense of pride in our contribution to this partnership and remain dedicated to working collaboratively to drive innovation and modernization within the industry,” says Sergei Astafjev, Wallester CEO.

Any resident of the Republic of Latvia – a natural person who has a functioning mobile phone – may apply for a PNS payment card. The mobile phone number is required in order to send a mobile text message with information about the card's PIN code and the registered 3D password. If the customer has not opened a PNS account, he or she must fill in the application to open an account and be issued with a payment card on the Latvijas Pasts website pasts.lv. If the customer already has an open PNS account, he or she only needs to fill in the application to receive a payment card on pasts.lv

Production of a payment card is a paid service according to the tariffs set by Latvijas Pasts.
