Latvijas Pasts in Kyiv receives words of thanks for ensuring the flow of postal items to Ukraine in wartime

During the opening of the international philatelic exhibition in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, where stamps released by the world’s postal establishments in support of Ukraine are exhibited, the managers of Ukrposhta, the Ukrainian postal company, thanked Latvijas Pasts both for ensuring the flow of postal items to Ukraine under the challenging circumstances of the war, and for the quick response of Latvijas Pasts being the first in the world to issue a stamp block dedicated to support of Ukraine. In turn, Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, who participated in the opening of the exhibition, emphasised the inspiring and admirable work of Ukrainian postal workers in a war situation, which is so much needed by the public and which “raises the importance of postal workers and postal functions to an unprecedented level”.

Latvijas Pasts was the first postal company in the world to issue a stamp block and a special cover in support of Ukraine on the 10th of March 2022, in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The stamp block issued by Latvijas Pasts was included in the international philatelic exhibition organised by the Ukrainian postal company Ukrposhta and opened on the 5th of April in Kyiv, in which representatives of Latvijas Pasts also participated.

Julia Pavlenko (Юлія Павленко), Director of International Operations Department at Ukrposhta, expressed her gratitude to the Latvijas Pasts team at the opening of the exhibition: “Latvijas Pasts was the first, even before us, to release a stamp in support of Ukraine, thus setting an example both for us and for other postal companies – and for that we are deeply grateful! Latvijas Pasts is also our long-term partner in ensuring the flow of e-commerce items – we thank you for the great work invested in maintaining this flow under the challenging circumstances of the war!”

At the opening of the exhibition, Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, highlighted the important contribution of the Ukrposhta employees for the benefit of the society, which demonstrates the great significance of the entire postal industry in everyday life in any circumstances: “On the 4th of April, together with the Ukrposhta postmen, we made deliveries in Borodyanka, a war-affected satellite town of Kyiv. We saw with our own eyes and were once again convinced of the invaluable role and contribution of the post to society, in providing both a social function and basic needs like delivering potatoes. The work of Ukrainian postal colleagues has already raised and will further raise the importance of postal workers and postal functions to an unprecedented level. It is inspiring and admirable work being done by the employees of Ukrposhta!”

The Latvian philatelic releases dedicated to supporting Ukraine – stamps, a coupon and a cover – form a single patriotic composition depicting the symbols of independence of both countries: the Independence Monument in Kyiv and the Freedom Monument in Riga, the national flags of Ukraine and Latvia, and inscriptions in Ukrainian and Latvian: We Are with You! and Glory to Ukraine!

The print run of the stamp block is 20,000 copies, and the print run of the cover is 800 copies. 50% of the proceeds from the sales of these stamps are transferred to support Ukraine through the intermediary of Ziedot.lv – nearly 18,000 euro has been donated so far.

The face value of each of the stamps included in the block is €1.44, and they can be used as postage in combination with stamps of other face values. For example, two stamps worth a total of €2.88 can be used to send ordinary letters weighing up to 20 grams to any country. The philatelic releases dedicated to the support of Ukraine have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

The stamp block is available for purchase at the post offices and in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts, which is the most convenient way of buying stamps, as it offers deliveries by courier to any address most suitable for the customer, as well as to Latvijas Pasts parcel lockers and post offices throughout Latvia.
