Latvijas Pasts launches a modern parcel processing line, speeding up processing operations and delivery to customers

Latvijas Pasts has installed a new, specialized parcel processing and sorting line in the Riga item processing and sorting centre as part of its ongoing automation of item processing and sorting operations. This equipment will further facilitate various manual operations, as well as significantly speed up the work process and reduce the time it takes to deliver parcels to customers. Using this equipment, a team of employees will be able to process at least 40% more parcels than before. This is already the second automated processing line of Latvijas Pasts; also, procurement for the purchase of additional letter sorting equipment was announced in August.

The new parcel processing and sorting machinery, which started operating in test mode in August, is designed to weigh, scan, measure, and sort a variety of standard parcels up to 30 kg, while automatically recording all data required for sending parcels. Nearly 80% of the parcels processed at Latvijas Pasts are postal parcels in this category. In addition, the device is mobile and can be connected to other automated sorting solutions as needed, thus increasing the total sorting capacity.

“Technological advancement and process automation are not only a necessity in this era of digitization but also a crucial step in being able to fully serve customer needs and demand. People in this day and age strive to optimize their day-to-day lives and expect efficient, fast, and modern services. Technology and digitization are how we can achieve this, while process automation is the key component that enables us to accomplish this goal in an effective and high-quality manner,” Kristaps Krūmiņš, Member of the Board at Lavijas Pasts points out.

One of the most notable benefits is that the parcel processing and sorting equipment will drastically cut the amount of time needed for item processing. Additionally, the new equipment will significantly simplify the work of the item processing team, as up until this point the parcel processing and sorting process was completely manual. Because the new line for processing and sorting parcels can automatically handle more than 2,500 items per hour, the efficiency of the sorting process can be improved by at least 40%. Additionally, it offers a variety of other helpful features. For instance, with its help, Latvijas Pasts obtains item data that is more accurate, which in turn enables improved and more contemporary planning of delivery routes.

The manufacturer of the new parcel processing and sorting line is Equinox Europe UAB, one of Europe’s leading developers of automated logistics solutions.

Latvijas Pasts continues the targeted implementation of modernization projects: In the near future, it is planned to purchase a new letter-sorting machine that is tailored to the needs of Latvijas Pasts. Work on digitizing services and expanding the parcel locker network and its capabilities continues. Furthermore, in order to promote the implementation of sustainable solutions in the company’s operations, Latvijas Pasts will install around 200 solar panels with a total capacity of 110 kW at the Latvijas Pasts office building by the end of this year.
