On the 26th of July this year, Latvijas Pasts releases a special stamp and a cover dedicated to Kuldiga, one of the most charming towns in Kurzeme. Last year, its unique old town was recognised at the global level, inscribing it on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place at the Elizabetes Street post office, 41/43 Elizabetes Street, Riga, from 9 AM to 6 PM.
The face value of the new stamp is €1.65, corresponding to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class up to 20 grams within Latvia. The print run of the stamp is 25,000 copies and the print run of the cover is 500 copies. The stamp and the cover have been designed by the artist Ludis Danilāns.
Kuldiga, whose history and development are linked to the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, a dynamic, rapidly growing society in the 16th–18th centuries, was historically known as Goldingen. It served as an important international hub for trade, crafts and intercultural exchange, forming a global network of mutual cooperation stretching from Europe to the coasts of Africa and the Caribbean.
Kuldiga stands out as the only town in the world that fully reflects the traditional architecture of the Baltic states, blending Latvian and German traditions. The town structure that evolved between the 13th and 18th centuries, as well as the harmonious urban environment, have been particularly well preserved. The picturesque landscape of the river valley is a true testimony of the traditional settlements in the region.
On the 17th of September 2023, Kuldiga was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, thus recognising and appreciating the unique value of the old town of Kuldiga, also on a global scale.
The new stamp will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities and in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts: https://veikals.pasts.lv/.
The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 9th of August.
Philatelic works issued by Latvijas Pasts are highly valued both among the customers and philatelic collectors and experts. Based on stringently regulated standards, international associations of collectors of philatelic materials have determined that the stamps issued by Latvijas Pasts are on par with the philatelic releases issued by the largest countries in the world. As a result, these stamps are routinely included both in the catalogues of philatelic releases recognised around the world and in the collections of prestigious collectors.
