Latvijas Pastsissues new stamp - Winter Olympics in Vancouver
The XXI Olympic Winter Games, which will take place in Canada, will begin on February 12, and Latvijas Pasts is issuing a new stamp to mark this event - Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The first day event of the stamp will be held on February 5, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, in the post office Sakta in Riga, 32 Brīvības Boulevard.
The creator of the new stamp's design is artist Ludis Danilāns. The stamp displays a scene from an ice hockey match, with a player of the Latvian national team fighting for the puck with another player. A special cancellation and a first day envelope will be issued together with the new stamp. The cancellation shows the silhouette of a hockey player, a hockey stick and puck. Both the stamp and the envelope also bear the symbol of the Vancouver Olympics - Ilanaaq. Ilanaaq means friend, and it has traditionally been presented as a person with open arms; the stamp and envelope show it in the five Olympic colors together with the Olympic rings.
The denomination of the stamp is LVL 0.55, print run - 300,000 stamps.
Latvijas Pastshas also issued stamps dedicated to previous Olympic Games - the Beijing Olympics (2008); Torino Olympics (2006); Games of the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney (2000); and Atlanta Olympics (1996).
