Latvijas Pastsissues stamps dedicated to children's books
On April 9, 2010, in the post office Sakta, VAS Latvijas Pasts will hold the first day ceremony of the stamps Children's Books issued as part of the Europa series.
The new stamps will depict various fairytale characters and books. All countries of Europe issue postage stamps with a unified theme within the Europa series. The topic selected for this year is children's books
The author of drawings for the Children's Books stamps is Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja. They will be available in denominations of LVL 0.55 and 1.20, each with a print run of 300,000 stamps.
The first day event with a special cancellation will take place in the post office Sakta in Riga, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Dace Pugača, Executive Director of the Latvian Publishers' Association, believes that children's books deserve their own stamp: "A book is a fantastic friend and teacher that tells from an early age how to distinguish good and evil, gives wings to dreams, and shows the vastness of the world and the depths of the human spirit. The role of books in raising children to become intellectually rich adults cannot be overstated."
Latvijas Pastshas been issuing the stamp series Europa since 1994. The topics of these stamps have included Struggle for Peace - characters from Andrejs Pumpurs' epic poem Lāčplēsis, Woman of the Year - writer Zenta Mauriņa, National Festivals - the Song Festival, National Parks and Reserves - national reserve Krustkalni, etc.
The next new stamp issue is planned for April 23.
