Stamp dedicated to modern architecture
On 16 July 2010, the first day ceremony of the stamp Modern Architecture of Latvia will take place in the premises of the Latvian Association of Architects.
The stamp and first day envelope, which tell about modern architecture in Latvia, depict the sports hall in Talsi. The designer of the new stamp is artist Ģirts Grīva. Its print run is 150,000 stamps, face value - LVL 1.50.
Architects, the creators of the project, express their satisfaction: "For 60 years, the educational institution in the hills of Talsi was in need of an organic sports hall extension - energy-efficient and with a special accent, including technological experiments with an arched profile of the bearing construction. With the character of metal, immateriality of glass, and intimacy of wood. A building to which we very much wished to give a special character. We are happy this building has now also been depicted in a stamp."
All enthusiasts of philately will be able to view and already purchase the new stamp on July 16 in the premises of the Latvian Association of Architects (11 Torņa Street, Riga), where the first day cancellation event will take place. The ceremony will be attended and speeches will be given by representatives of the Latvian Association of Architects and Latvijas Pasts. Everyone is welcome to attend the event from 10 AM to 6 PM; the first day ceremony will take place on 12:00.
Talsi Sports Hall was opened on September 1, 2008. Its designers are architects of AS UPB - U. Pīlēns, G. Pīlēna, Dz. Heinsbergs, I. Ķauķe. Among the sports halls of Latvian schools, the Talsi Hall is architecturally interesting and stands out both thanks to its functional and constructive solutions and the building materials used. Talsi Sports Hall was named the best new building in Latvia in 2008.
The next new stamp issue is planned for August 5.
