Latvijas Pastsdedicates stamp to anniversary of Latvijas Dzelzceļš

Latvijas Pastswill hold the first day ceremony of the stamp History of Latvijas Dzelzceļš in the Latvian Railway History Museum on August 5.

Latvijas Pastshas issued the stamp to mark the 91st founding anniversary of the national railroad company. The creator of the new stamp is artist Ludis Danilāns. The stamp's face value is LVL 0.40, its print run: 300,000 stamps.

The stamp displays a locomotive of the RP series. Such locomotives, 13 in total, ensured railroad transport in Latvia in the middle of the 20th century.

The new stamp is accompanied by a first-day envelope and special cancellation. The envelope displays a railway and the railroad map of Latvia; the special cancellation shows a part of a train wheel.

"Latvijas Dzelzceļš and Latvijas Pasts commenced a joint project last summer, on the 90th anniversary of the company - a series of 4 stamps dedicated to railroad history in Latvia. This is the second stamp in the series, and we hope it will be as successful and popular as the first, as it is a way of telling more about this type of transportation and its development over time," tells Regīna Svirska, Director of Communications at VAS Latvijas Dzelzceļš.

The first day ceremony of the new stamp will be held on August 5 at 12:30 PM in the Platform Hall of the Latvian Railway History Museum (2/4 Uzvaras Boulevard, Riga). It will be attended by Uģis Magonis, chair of the board of Latvijas Dzelzceļš; Toms Altbergs , expert of the Latvian Railway History Museum; and Aivars Veiss, chair of the board of Latvijas Pasts. The first day cancellation event, which will take place in the premises of the museum from 10 AM to 5 PM, will be the first of several events dedicated to the anniversary of Latvijas Dzelzceļš.

Rail transport started developing in the territory of Latvia as early as the 1860s. Over time it has both flourished technologically and been able to endure the competition of motor transport, always maintaining a significant role in the social and economic life of Latvia.

The next new stamp issue is planned for September 10.
