Latvijas Pastsissues stamp to mark 800th anniversary of Riga pfennig

To mark the 800th anniversary of Riga's historical unit of currency - the pfennig - Latvijas Pasts is issuing a stamp depicting the pfennig and the place of its minting - the city of Riga. The first day event of the stamp will take place on May 25 in the National History Museum of Latvia in 3 Pils Square, Riga, from 10 AM to 6 PM.

The face value of the stamp Riga pfennig - 800, designed by artist Valda Batraka, is LVL 0.98 (corresponds to the cost of mailing a registered letter within Latvia), and its print run consist of 100,000 stamps.

The new stamp is accompanied by a first-day envelope and special cancellation. The envelope, like the stamp, depicts the pfennig and Riga City, where it was minted. The special cancellation displays the founder of Riga, Bishop Albert, wearing a mitre, holding a cross with a small ball above in his right hand and a crosier in his left.

In 1211, Bishop Albert of Riga granted the merchants of Gothland the privilege to mint coins in the Diocese of Riga. Marking the historical anniversary, Latvijas Pasts is giving everyone the opportunity to purchase a stamp depicting the historical money, while the National History Museum of Latvia will have the ancient currency units - pfennigs and silver ingots - on display from May 26.

The next new stamp issue is planned for June 14.
