To mark the 150^th anniversary of Anna Brigadere, one of the classics of Latvian literature, Latvijas Pasts has issued a special envelope depicting the illustrious writer. The first-day cancellation event will take place on Brigadere's birthday, October 1, in post office Sakta, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga, from 8 AM to 6 PM.

The commemorative envelope designed by artist Ģirts Grīva shows a photo of Anna Brigadere sitting at a stack of books and a vase of beautiful daisies. The background is the text of one of her best-known plays, Sprīdītis. The envelopes with the first-day cancellation will be available for purchase for LVL 0.35, and their total print run is 1,000 copies.

Anna Brigadere (1861-1933) is a beloved Latvian writer, playwright and poet. Brigadere wrote her first story Hospital circa 1893, and her first book - the story Old Karlīne - was published in 1897. In October 1903, the director of Riga Latvian Theater, Jēkabs Āriņš-Duburs, requested the writer to translate a children's play. Brigadere, after not finding anything suitable, wrote the fairytale play Sprīdītis in three days, which kick-started the fairytale play genrein Latvian literature. Anna Brigadere has also written the plays Princess Gundega and King Roughbeard, Maija and Paija, and Lolita's Wonderbird. Brigadere's largest work, published at the end of her life, was the trilogy God, Nature, Work (1926), In Biting Winds (1930) and In the Stone Cage (1933), based on Brigadere's experiences in her childhood and early youth.

The next new philatelic issue is planned for October 14.
